[[12.1 - A Small Detour]]

<<Ready Room, 1450, Day 1>>

Standing from her desk and stepping aside, Isabel then walked over to the viewport. From where they were docked, she could see a couple of the other docking pylons. Isabel wondered how James and his crew were getting along; from what she'd heard, they were getting another Intrepid Class - the USS Peacekeeper, and had the opportunity to hand pick a good portion of the Engineering department.

Her thoughts drifted to Derek.. Due to the Security rules, she hadn't been able to speak to him herself since he was placed in his quarters. Hardly helpful in trying to get through to him or to see how much he remembered. Perhaps the journey to Ivor Prime would allow her that - especially if Derek improved enough that Jake no longer required quite as stringent security protocols.

Hearing the doorchime, Isabel turned, "Come in."

Britney (NPC) walked into the Ready Room gingerly. "Captain?"

"Good afternoon," Isabel replied, smiling. "I've not seen you since we docked - did you enjoy your shoreleave?"

Nodding, Britney replied, "Yes, it was a nice break." She thought of Caleb (NPC) and her face reddened slightly. "Did you get any time to relax?"

"Some, yes. Is there something I can do for you?"

"Yes, ma'am. The Malinche is ready for departure whenever you are. Lieutenant JG Schulz has reported that all necessary medical supplies has been loaded onto the Malinche, and everyone is back on the ship," Britney replied.

Isabel nodded, "Thank you. I'll be out in a minute."

With a brief grin and a nod, Britney turned and headed back to the bridge.

Heading to the door with a final look around her new Ready Room, Isabel straightened her uniform before walking onto the bridge. Everyone was either at or near their stations, and she saw Jason standing behind the Operations and Flight Control consoles.

Isabel looked around again at the new bridge module; she would have to thank Todd and his team for their extra work. Though she'd had the original Prometheus bridge for the past four years, Isabel had never liked being completely isolated from everyone else or just the overall layout. She had hoped it would grow on her, but it never did, so she requested that it be changed.

Nodding at Jason, Isabel walked past Flight Control and the Executive Officer's chair to her own. "Everyone to your stations; prepare for departure."

She took a seat in her new chair; she liked the new teal-ish blue and grey color scheme. "Do we have departure clearance?"

"Yes ma'am," said the Flight Control Officer.

"Take us out; once we're clear of the Starbase, set in a course for Ivor Prime, Warp 6," Isabel ordered.

Nodding, he replied, "Ivor Prime, Warp 6, aye."

Once they were clear of Starbase 386 and on their way, Isabel was already feeling restless. She stood, then turned to Jason, "Lieutenant, you have the bridge, I need to check on a few things."

<<USS Malinche>>
<Bridge, 1458, Day 1>

Jason took a deep breath; he had been in commad before but it felt different some how. Maybe it was because this was his first time being back on the bridge of a starship for almost a 18 months. The captain's chair still felt a little to big for him; he made a mental note to ask Kersare how she got used to it. Of course she probably had a lot more time to adjust to the idea; Jason assumed that he would be returning to a place in operations and was pretty surprised when command assigned him to his current post.

He had met a few of the bridge crew already, including Will Schulz, the Operations Chief. Some of the others though, he had yet to meet. That was another reason he wanted them to come to the holodeck this evening, it woudl give him a chance to get to knwo them and bond with them all. That was one thing that he took away from the Hale; you needed to know your staff, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to push them to what they were really capable of.

He headed forward, sitting at the flight control station was ensign Joseph Carson (NPC). Jason had read the file on the red haired ensign his way over; overly rigided is what one crew mate discribed Joseph as. Joseph had red hair and blue eyes and from the way that his uniform wore on him, Jason could only guess that he was in good shape.

"How are the engines looking ensign?" Jason asked, casually.

"In perfect working order sir!"

Jason arched an eyebrow and looked at Schulz, who merely shrugged. Apparently Carson was going to be that rigid.

"Ensign, relax before you sprain something."

"Sir, yes sir."

"Just...you know a sir isn't necessary after everything."

"Sir, I know that sir."

Jason sighed, clearly that was a battle that was better waged on another day. He settled instead for looking over at Schulz, who merely shrugged again.

"I know that some of you may remember me from my time as operations chief," Jason said, starting to walk around the bridge. "I can assure I will do my best to listen to all you suggestions, comments, concerns and even compliants. But I expect good work...make that extraordinary work out of all of you. You have all proven that in the past. Oh and please do me a favor; relax a little. I haven't ever flogged anyone and I don't intend to start now."

With that said, Jason sat back down in the command chair.

"Department heads, how are we looking?" Jason asked, scanning the bridge.

<Cargo Hold, 0830 hrs, Day 1>

Oliver wasn't all that pleased with the way the cargo division stacked up the medical supplies.

"Just like the engineers to stack something so neat and snug you can't get your finger in a socket." said Oliver.

His frustration showed a bit, but he tried to keep a smile on his face.

"Doctor, it's not that big of a deal is it? I mean we can scan everything with the tricorders without physically checking the seals and such on the containers."

Oliver looked over at Doctor Townsen. "Adam my boy, you've got to learn it's not how high or how neat you stack something; it's how quick you can get to it. Not only will it take longer to get the supplies off the ship, but now I can't visually inspect anything."

Oliver saw that ever present dumb struck look on Townsen's face. He turned to face the young man. "Ok. It's like when you were in secondary school; you saw a pretty girl and wanted to get a peek inside at the sacred chalice...."

"Huh? Doctor, I'm not sure where you're going with this. I went to a private all male school."

Oliver slapped his hand on his forehead. "Oy....and I thought I was naive when I was your age." He looked around for a few moments and then caught sight of a young attractive engineering specialist working on the far side of the cargo hold.

"You see that pretty girl over there?" Oliver had to actually point her out to Adam.

"Oh yeah. Specialist Chou. She's a sweet gal." Adam had a big grin on his face. "But Doctor, I don't know where you are going with this."

Oliver smiled wider. "I'll bet you don't." He suddenly realized perhaps Adam swung the other way.

Oliver turned back to the medical cargo, examining what his tricorder was telling him and matching it against what the briefing said. Everything seemed to be in order, but of course, that was when something always seemed to go wrong.

Oliver was lost deep in concentration for several minutes and sudddenly realized he was the only one working on the cargo manifest. He was bent down looking at the label on the bottom of the container and looked up, eyeballing Adam Townsen.

Townsen was not concentrating on his work; he looked like he was somewhere else.

Oliver stood up, half turned. "What seems to be your problem son?"

"I don't know Doc, I seem to be not feeling well."

"Look son. I can handle it from here. Why don't you go get some rest."

Adam didn't even look at Oliver. "Ah, ok Doc. Yeah, I'll do that."

Oliver watched Adam walk away and went back to working on the manifest and the cargo.

<<USS Malinche, Zeral?s Office, 1401, Day 1>>

Finishing up her notes for her previous appointment, Nora set her PADD down when she heard the doorchime. ?Come in,? she called, and her fourth appointment for the day, Lieutenant Veronique Laurent (NPC) walked into the office. Nora?s senses were nearly overwhelmed by the wave of emotions emanating from the other woman. Though she knew better than to make any hasty judgments, she had the feeling that this psych evaluation was going to be vastly different from the previous ones.

?You must be Lieutenant Laurent,? the counselor greeted. ?I?m Doctor Nora Zeral. Please make yourself comfortable.? Veronique moved stiffly to the couch opposite Nora?s chair, crossing her legs and waiting expectantly with a no-nonsense look on her face.

?To begin with, what do you prefer to go by??

?Lieutenant Laurent will be fine,? Veronique replied coolly.

?Lieutenant Laurent it is,? Nora agreed with a smile. She was met with silence. Clearing her throat, she continued, ?I?m sure you?ve had a psych eval before. I?m just going to ask you a few questions, all right?? Silence again. Taking up her PADD once more, Nora began to ask her a series of simple questions, electing to stick to the standard list that most counselors used for evaluations.

Veronique responded succinctly to each question, her manner calm and collected. But Nora was certain, using both her experience as a counselor and her innate abilities as a telepath that something was definitely bothering the woman. ?Lieutenant Laurent,? she began, letting her PADD fall to her lap. ?Is there something on your mind??

Doubt flashed in Veronique?s eyes, and for one brief moment her cool composure slipped. ?No, I?m perfectly all right. Just fine. I'd just like to get this evaluation over with.? Whatever was bothering her, the dam was about to break. Before Nora needed to ask anymore questions Veronique burst out, ?No, I?m not fine. I want to be fine, but I?m not. It?s just that I?he??

?He?? Nora questioned gently.

?Yes, he, my boyfriend?he?broke up with me. Over shoreleave.? Without further warning she burst into tears and Nora leapt from her chair to slide next to the sobbing woman. ?I?ve been trying so hard not to let it bother me? I just don?t want to think about it, you know? I don?t want it to affect my work.?

?That doesn?t make it any less painful, though. Pushing your feelings aside only makes them harder to face in the end. And if you don?t face them, they?ll only eat away at you, and then you?re really going to have a hard time focusing on your work.?

Veronique continued to sniffle while Nora offered her advice, nodding agitatedly all the while. ?I see what you mean, Counselor, and I guess you?re right. I mean, it?s just that he was?he?s so?great. Why would he want to break up with me?? Dissolving into tears once more, Nora was shocked when Veronique threw her arms around her. ?I mean, what?s so wrong with me??

Two things were abundantly clear to Nora: First of all, she was going to have to reschedule her remaining appointments. Second of all, they were going to need tissues. Lots and lots of tissues.

ON: <<Main Bridge, USS Malinche, MD01, 1300>>

?Hold it,? Will shouted, jogging the last few steps to the turbolift as the doors began to shut. He managed to slip inside just in time, the doors closing right behind him.

?Where to, sir,? the crewman asked, looking at Will.

?Bridge,? Will answered, causing the lift to begin its ascent. For a moment, there was a strained silence in the car, as if both of them wanted to say something, but didn?t know what. Finally, Will decided to break the ice. ?Did you enjoy your shoreleave, crewman,? he asked.

?Oh, yes sir,? the man replied, ?A few friends and I decided to hang out at Red?s on the station, play a few games of pool. You, sir??

?Just one of my favorite holo-programs,? Will replied as the lift began to slow, ?most of my time got chewed up with cargo transfers. Looks like this is my stop.? The lift came to a halt and the doors opened, granting Will his first look at the new bridge?operational that was.

He stepped out of the lift, hearing the doors hiss shut behind him. At first, he just wanted to take a moment to familiarize himself with the new look. The colors were milder than the stark white of the old bridge. He could see that the center chair arrangement had been changed as well. His eyes rested on the new Ops and Conn at the front of the bridge. Slowly, he made his way around until he was standing above his new station, looking down at the dark console.

?Aren?t you going to try it on,? a voice behind him asked. He looked over his shoulder to see Lt. Summers (NPC) working at one of the auxiliary consoles on the side of the bridge.

?I suppose now?s as good a time as any,? Will said, sliding into the chair and turning to face the main viewscreen. Carefully, he laid his hands on the console?s surface, causing it to come to life at his touch. Tapping a few commands, he ran a simple diagnostic of all systems while he continued to arrange the console the way he liked.

?I take it you?re going to want to be the first one to take her out,? Summers said, finishing up what he was working on.

?That was the plan,? Will replied with a mischievous grin, ?Once we?re clear and we?re sure there?s nothing out of the ordinary, I guess you can take over again. Besides, I should really get down to see the doctor. I got a few complaints from him yesterday regarding the cargo placement.?

?A few,? Summers repeated, ?I don?t think he had anything good to say about it at all. None of it was in the right place, he couldn?t get to it?? Will held up his hand and Summers? tirade ended, though he still seemed a bit frustrated at that point.

?Like I said, I?ll talk to him,? Will said, ?Later. Right now, I?m going to see what all this new station can do.? Like a child given a new toy, Will began to experiment with the various features of his console, taking interest in each result.

[Phaser Range, Deck 3, 16:00 Hours, Day One]

?A Medical supply run,? Jake thought as he entered the holodeck, his personally adjusted Type 2 Phaser holstered on his belt. It would give his security personnel the chance to improve their performance, if anything. And the Security/Tactical stations on the Malinche?s new Bridge module would need breaking in, sure he?d spent his shoreleave working on them, testing, configuring and reconfiguring, but he still wanted to test them.

He?d already planned a number of battle drills and weapons tests. All he had to do was get Kersare to sign off on it. Since his conversation with Rachael Hubbard, he?d opted to avoid the Captain as much as possible until he worked up the nerve to give her the cold hard facts of his days in SSWAT. He knew that she felt his service record had barely scratched the surface of what transpired, she wasn?t a fool afterall.

Maybe it was the fact that they?d barely gotten to know each other as colleagues, let alone friends. He trusted her, what officer couldn?t trust someone with her well-earned reputation and experience.

He stepped into the center of the dimly lit holodeck. His favourite Phaser training program had already been activated. Drawing his phaser, he said ?Computer, begin program at level 16.?

?AKNOWLEDGED,? the computer replied ?YOU MAY BEGIN FIRING IN 3? 2? 1?? at the sound of a short beep, a number of flashing coloured lights appeared out of thin air. Quaid immediately began firing at the fast moving targets, hitting a few of them.

?Off your game today Quaid,? he thought to himself as he gritted his teeth and continued to fire. ?The business with Danny and Rachael must really be getting to me.?

Shot after shot of orange light sprang out from the phaser and within quick succession all but one of the flashing coloured lights were hit by phaser fire, the remaining light flickered out.

?TEST COMPLETE, YOUR CURRENT EFFICIENCY RATING IS AT 94.5%, YOUR BEST RATING WAS 97.2%. TIME TAKEN TO COMPLETE THE LEVEL: FIVE MINUTES, SEVENTEEN SECONDS. YOUR PERSONAL TIME RECORD IS FOUR MINUTES, TWO SECONDS,? the shrill sounding computer voice reported. ?WOULD YOU LIKE TO RESTART THIS EXCERCISE??

Quaid paused for a moment, it was pointless. His concerns still plagued his mind and his frustration was still paramount. He had to focus on his duties to try and make some sense of what was going on. He decided it was time to relieve Ensign Morris on the Bridge. Although he wasn?t due to go on duty for another few hours, he felt it was the best way to keep busy and keep his mind off of his personal problems.

?Negative, save log and end program,? Jake replied as he reholstered his phaser and proceeded to head for the exit. He planned to stop by his quarters, drop off his phaser and pick up the schedule for the battle drills and weapons tests first before heading to the Bridge.

<<USS Malinche>>
<Bridge, 1515, Day 1>

Jason was glad to see that pretty much everything was in order. There was a minor power spike in the EPS relays but Mr. Peters promised that he would have it tracked down in no time. Jason wasn't really all that upset by it; mainly due to the fact that the ship had undergone some serious refits. When you moved around that much hardwire, something was bound to hick up for awhile.

He stood up, straightening his shirt.

"Lt. Schulz the bridge is yours. I am going to go check in with Lt. Zeral."

"Aye sir," Will responded.

"Oh and Will try and keep her in one piece. I understand we are just cruising along but I would rather not start my first shift by telling the captain we have caused some major disaster."

"Understood sir," Will stated, Jason could see a small smile on his face.

Good,, Jason thought. Maybe that will get Carson (NPC) to relax a litte.

Jason entered the turbolift and located Zeral's office. Truth be told he hadn't been to their last one and never really located the office. Despite his time on the Malinche he never really got around to visiting the office; probably something to do with the last one telling him he was crazy for having visions. The lift bounced into motion with a litlte hitch, he made a mental note to have Schulz and Peters check that out.

His combagde beeped once.

"Barrett here."

"Liking the big chair?"

The voice on the other end was none other then Adam (NPC). Probably just finished his shift in sickbay.

"I'm out wandering around."

"Shouldn't they have a leash on you?"

"Har har, did you get the stuff for tonight?"

"Yup, just got it out of storage. Do we really have to cook everything by hand. Couldnt' we just replicate it all?"

"You know that I dont' want to do that."

"In that case I better get to work."

Jason smiled to himself as he stepped off the lift and headed toward Zeral's office.

<<USS Malinche>>
<Corridor, 1517, Day 1>>

After leaving the bridge, Jason made his way toward their Chief Counselor's office. Jason had a chance to skim her file as well on the way from Maran. Like almost all Chief Counselor's he knew she seemed to have had a great tragedy in her past. To be fair though, Jason had long ago realized that they were generally the most effective in what they did. He had no doubt that his psychological profile was an interesting read as well, a few of them had said that time and time again.

As he made his way through the corridors, he had to get used to the idea of people stepping aside for him or saluting him. It was going to take some time and that was if Kersare decided to keep him. Stopping at the door to her office he hit the door chime.

"Come in."

Jason stepped through the door and into a warm and comfortable office. He felt at home almost instantly. He saw Nora Zeral sitting behind her desk, going through a variety of PADDs.

"Pleased to meet you, I'm Jason Barrett your new XO. You're Nora Zeral, right?"

Grateful for the distraction, Nora rose from behind her desk and moved to shake his hand. "Lieutenant Barrett, of course. Yes, I'm Dr. Zeral. It's a pleasure to meet you, sir. Would you like to sit down?" she gestured towards the couch with a smile.

"Of course."

Nora took her seat in the chair across from him, threading her fingers together in her lap. "This is a pleasant surprise. What brings you to this neck of the woods?"

"Just doing my rounds," Jason smiled. "I hadn't had a chance to meet you yet and wanted to before we get too much underway. How are things going in your neck of the woods?"

?Oh, I see. Reconnaissance, is it?? Nora teased. ?I?m happy to say that things seem to be progressing pretty smoothly here. After the events of our last mission?well, let?s just say counseling will have its hands full for a little while.? Not to mention all of the psych evaluations she had been hoping to complete. Things were certainly going to be busy. "But I think we're up to the task," she added optimistically.

"Glad to hear it, seems to be the running theme around here lately," Jason responded.

He was glad to know that most of the senior staff appeared to have a rather upbeat attitude when it came to things; that would help his job along a great deal. He had learned on his last post with the Marans that nothing threw a proverbial wrench into to works like senior officers with bad attitudes.

?If I understand correctly, this isn?t your first time aboard the Malinche. Welcome back and congratulations,? she smiled.

"Thanks," Jason smiled. "Is there anything that you or your department require?"

?No, I believe we have everything we need and then some, but thank you. I have to admit that I?m still learning names, but I?m very pleased with everyone in the department.? Nora had known her fair share of difficult counselors, but so far she was very happy with her fellow counselors and crewmembers.

?Alternately, is there anything we can do for you? Schedule a psych exam, perhaps?? Nora asked with a grin, nodding in the direction of her desk and the PADDs stacked there. ?You wouldn?t believe what some people would do to get out of a psych exam,? she laughed.

"I have no doubt, I am dating a guy that seems to be very good at those things."

"You mean Adam (NPC)?"

"His reputation precedes him I see," Jason smiled.

"Very much so. If you see him, do remind him that he needs to get that done."

"I will," Jason smiled. "As for me, I was lucky and got it out of the way as soon as I re-enlisted in Starfleet."

?Very lucky,? Nora agreed with a wry smile. ?I don?t think I?m that intimidating, but not everyone loves a counselor. Sometimes I think I?d be more successful if I used some of Dr. O?s tactics to convince crewmembers to meet with me,? she laughed again, thinking of the very entertaining and likely very true stories she?d heard about Oliver.

"You should have been around when Amanda Darkhelm was our CMO; try telling a former Marine that you aren't going to do something," Jason smiled.

?I can imagine. Well, it?s been wonderful meeting with you, Lieutenant. I might stop by the bridge soon. I?ve heard it?s undergone some wonderful changes.?

"It has, also I wanted to invite you to a little get together I am having on the holodeck this evening around 1900. I would love to see you there."

?It sounds wonderful. I?ll be there,? Nora assured him. ?Holodeck, 1900 hours,? she repeated for memory?s sake, then rose to escort Jason to the door.

Day 1/ 15:00 hrs

Aaron was finishing the last of the status reports when he heard the door chime.
?Enter? he called turning to see who his visitor was.

?So I heard you?re officially in charge of this department now.? Dr. Trout (NPC) walked in the office with a bottle of Synthehol in his hand.

?You heard right, the Captain made it official during shoreleave although I wasn?t aware it was public knowledge. ?

John shrugged.
?News travels fast, be it good or bad. Speaking of which, you here we got a new XO??

?I did, according to scuttlebutt he spent most of his career as an Operations officer which in my opinion is a good career track for command.? Aaron motioned towards the bottle.
?Are we going to have a celebratory drink or not??

?Of course, let me get it open.?

Aaron grabbed some cups from his desk holding them out for John to fill. After the two scientists made several toasts they chatted about several new discoveries from the scientific community and the possible implications of those discoveries. Talk than turned to life on board the Malinche.

?Sure is a lot different here than on Atlantis? commented John, ?I?ve spent most my career planet side often working on behalf of the local governments instead of Starfleet or the Federation.?

?I guess when you?re a civilian you have more say as to your assignments. But you?re right; while each post is different there is an atmosphere present on ships that isn?t there on stations or planet side bases and vice versa.?

?I can certainly understand that. How do you think the crew is coping with the last mission??

Aaron shrugged.
?Hard to say, people react differently. I wouldn?t be surprised if for many this was their first real taste of the darker side of space. I can?t speak for others with combat experience, but for me it dredged up memories I?d sooner forget. You really want to know find out how busy the counseling office is, that?s usually a good indication as to the crew?s state of mind.?

?I?m no medic but that information is probably privileged. I?m sure we both have things to do while things are slow, so I?ll let you get back to your work. Congrats again Aaron.?

<<Sickbay, 1518, Day 1>>

Isabel walked into Sickbay quietly, watching as the various personnel hurried about. After a quick scan of the main area, she determined Oliver wasn?t there. She saw a nurse walk by and stopped her, ?Excuse me, nurse, is Doctor Lovestreet here??

?I believe he?s in his office, ma?am,? the nurse replied, carefully balancing a few PADDs.

?Thank you,? Isabel told her. Heading for the doctor?s office, she paused outside and knocked, ?Doctor Lovestreet??

Oliver was looking at two PADDs at once. He seemed irritated at something. He didn't even look up when he heard a knock on his office door, though it was open. "Ah, yeah come in. What is it this time? Somebody get another Shore Leave disease?"

Raising an eyebrow, Isabel walked into the office, ?No, Doctor? I was wondering if you?ve had the chance to check the supplies we got from Starbase 386 for Ivor Prime?? A bit confused, she had to wonder exactly how many of her crew had come to the doctor with some form of disease?

Oliver realized he was being visited by the Skipper. Looking up, he blushed a bit. "Oh Captain; nice to see you. What brings you down to this corner of the world? Sorry about that. Ah, yeah I was down there earlier today with Ensign Townsen. Everything seems to be in order, though if we have a toxic noxious gas form in the cargo hold it's not my fault."

?Why would there be a toxic noxious gas? And were there a lot of people with Shore Leave disease?? Neither sounded very good to Isabel?

Oliver realized he was talking about two different subjects at the same time. "Ah, sorry Skipper. I sometimes get disgusted with Engineers", he stood up and dropped several PADDs on the floor," as you might be able to tell I'm a little less than at my best today." Oliver slowly stooped over and picked up the PADDs and smiled curtly. "As to the Shore Leave disease, only a handful of the ship's crew contracted it, which is a great percentage considering how many people are aboard this flying contraption."

She nodded, ?The disease isn?t anything life-threatening though??

Oliver laughed. "No, nothing life threatening; though it might be life altering if they didn't come see me."

?I believe Operations and Engineering were working together on transferring the supplies? Were you able to take an inventory?? Isabel decided to leave the disease topic alone; it was Oliver?s area of expertise after all.

"Yeah we took care of that. All of the supplies listed on the manifest appear to be accounted for; though I'd have arranged things differently. I just hope none of those personnel come down with anything soon."

Isabel nodded, ?Everyone has their own way of doing things I suppose. Have you met our new Executive Officer yet??

Well, if they don't start taking more care with those supplies, it'll be a very different way of doing things. Of course, it's not my neck; they'll be the ones picking parts off their anatomy." Oliver chuckled. He looked down as he chuckled and smirked. Remembering he was with the Skipper, he looked up and ran a hand across his face. "OH...you were asking about the Exec. No I haven't met him yet. We have a new one eh? I don't keep up with the local ship politics very well."

?Yes, Commander Hunt left with very little notice? I?m not sure if you remember him, but Lieutenant Barrett who was our Chief Operations Officer for awhile is our temporary Executive Officer. He may stay on after this mission though,? she replied. Honestly, Isabel wasn?t surprised Oliver wasn?t aware of Jason being Executive Officer. The Medical Department had been awfully busy between checking the supplies, Derek (NPC), and the day-to-day Sickbay needs.

"A Lieutenant for Executive Officer. I must say, we getting short on senior officers around the fleet?" Oliver waved the Captain into the office, pointing to a comfortable looking chair adjacent to the desk. "I think I recall Commander Hunt. I met him once or twice. Interesting fellow. Not as interesting as the Exec on my last assignment. Now there was someone who was confused as to his or her gender. We just called him Pat. At least I think it was a him." Oliver leaned his face on an arm as he crossed arms. "Well you know we have been pretty busy around here; what with the deborging of crew and then there was Derek; now there was an unlucky fellow."

?Well, Lieutenant Barrett left StarFleet for a time, and just recently came back. I imagine that has something to do with his rank,? she replied. Isabel took a seat in the chair Oliver had indicated. At the mention of her husband, she found herself at a loss for words, a knot forming in her stomach. Finally she managed, ?Yes, medical and counseling have been rather busy.?

Oliver sat down, pushing PADDs off the seat which fell to the floor. "I'll get to those later." said Oliver. He grinned as he sat down. "So, what else can I do for you? I don't imagine you came all the way down here to little old sickbay to talk about cargo manifests and shore leave disease." Oliver leaned back in his chair, pressing his fingertips together. "You know Skipper, it takes quite a person to be able to stare death in the face and defeat it."

?Well...I?? In her mind, the reasons for her visit were just to check on Sickbay and the medical supplies, but deep down she was still concerned for Derek. ?Has anyone from medical checked on Derek lately??

"You know I was wondering when you were going to get around to that. It's actually on my schedule to do. I was going to assign Ensign Townsen to the task but I was thinking about personally taking that on myself." Oliver searched his CO's face - her eyes - for signs of letting her guard down. He knew she was keeping herself in check; knew she probably wanted to ask more than she was about Derek. He smiled. "I will look in on Derek myself later. I think he's doing ok. I've got the computer checking his vitals often. The medical supplies; well, there is another matter. You might want to let those guys in the cargo hold know next time to wait for me to get down there and help them with the distribution."

Isabel nodded. ?I?ll pass the message along. And I appreciate you checking in on Derek, Doctor.? She folded her hands in her lap, ?Do you think he?ll regain his memories? Or be anything like the Derek I knew before???

Oliver's face changed from a look of warmth to concern. He looked down at his hands and his lips pursed. He looked back up at the Skipper. "Captain, I don't know. I wish I could say for sure. There was a lot of damage in there. The Borg really did a number on him; and I'm not just whistling dixie." He moved forward and placed a hand on her knee. "Isabel, I know you must be torn inside. It's got to be hard on you; believing he was gone and suddenly finding him alive. I know you probably want him to remember everything; to recall the life he had before; the life he had with you." Oliver sat back, not wanting the Captain to feel too uncomfortable. "I don't know how long it will take. All I can say is keep trying."

?I put pictures in his quarters?mementos from our time together. I don?t know?I don?t think it?s helping. And having the Security guard inside doesn?t exactly help either, though I know Lieutenant Quaid is just trying to be cautious,? she sighed. ?I?m just not sure what else I can be doing or should be doing. I understood things before, but now?.now everything?s been turned upside down.?

"You know, I always insist rank is dropped when people enter my sickbay. We're here to heal people and it's a hell of a lot easier if we don't have to worry about saluting people or worrying about protocol when we are healing them." Oliver considered her words. He waited a few moments before answering her. "What about installing a video link system in the rooms? That would allow Security to keep an eye on him without...keeping an eye on him."

Isabel nodded, ?I can talk to Jake about that? I?m not sure how happy he?ll be, though. And it still might not help. I know that if he regains his memories it?ll likely be a slow process, and a difficult one; but I still wish I could do something else to help.? Perhaps she would start trying to spend more time with him?or see if she could convince Jake to let her take him to a holodeck ? maybe seeing familiar surroundings would help.

"Well, have you talked to our beautiful Chief Counselor...ah I mean..yeah." Oliver moved his chair back. "I mean I'm sure she could be of more help to you on that end than I can. It's not a specialty of mine."

?I talked to Nora about it a little, but she?s been rather busy with the crew and psych evaluations,? Isabel replied. She still found it a bit difficult to be calling her staff by their first names ? it shouldn?t be so uncomfortable for her, but since she?d become a Commanding Officer and, she had to admit, since Derek?s?supposed death she?d kept her distance from people. ?I should probably schedule an appointment with her though.?

Oliver had forgotten about those dreaded evals. He hoped Nora had forgotten to get his done; then again, it would allow him some time to be near her. "Well, I think it's important for you two to get some time together. Perhaps Nora could set some time aside for you and reserve a holodeck. It might be helpful to recreate some events that were important to the two of you." Oliver's computer beeped. It was the message he'd been waiting for from Starfleet Medical. He'd sent his paper in and requested some feedback and helpful notes to perhaps help with Derek's memories.

Isabel gave him a brief smile, ?I think I will do that.? Hearing the beep, she said, ?I don?t want to keep you... Let me know if you find anything important about Derek or if you need anything.?

Oliver watched Isabel stand. He stood too out of respect. "Captain, don't let our hustle and bustle keep you from visiting again. I think you'll find beneath all our pomp and fluff we're really just a bunch of people trying to keep this crew healthy in more ways than one. Besides, who else can could get away with so many fun things all in the name of science?" Oliver chuckled.

Despite her somewhat somber mood after discussing Derek, Isabel laughed, ?Don?t worry, I won?t Doctor. Thank you.?

"Come see us again any time Skipper. For an encore we're planning on melting all the borg parts and making them into an old fashioned bar-b-que. Should be a swell time. Maybe we'll have a cook off against the engineers." Oliver shook hands with the Captain.

Isabel nodded and managed a grin, ?Could be therapeutic and entertaining. Have a good day.?

Oliver watched the Captain leaving Sickbay and as soon as she was gone sat down at this desk to open the message from HQ. Oliver hoped it would be good news. Perhaps it could mean something better for Derek; certainly for Isabel

ON: <USS Malinche Bridge, Day 1, 1445>

Peters stepped out of the lift and stopped. He looked around the new bridge and had to admit it was a hell of an improvement over the default layout that the Malinche had been operating with since he came aboard. This certainly seemed worth all the extra work he and his department had been required to do to integrate systems the past 3 days.

Walking across the bridge to the Engineering I station, Peters logged into the console and sat down. The chair was comfortable, if a bit stiff due to being brand new. All in all, Peters had to call the whole package an improvement. And it would be even better when the switch-over to bio-neural systems was completed.

"Trying out the new facilities, Lieutenant?" the ensign at the science station next to him asked. Peters looked over and grinned.

"No good engineer calls a job done until he's tested the fruits of his labors," Peters replied. The ensign nodded and went back to his work. Peters stole one more look around the bridge before calling up a systems diagnostic.

He hadn't done a bridge shift while aboard the Malinche. In fact, his last shift on the bridge of any ship had been nearly 7 years prior. Being an engineer on a starbase and at R&D didn't really give one much opportunity to take shifts on a starship's bridge.

Still, sitting at a bridge console, it seemed like just yesterday that he'd been on the bridge last. Peters smiled again. One shift, then it was back to Engineering for him. But he'd be on hand if there were any issues with the new bridge's trial run, also known as departure.

<<USS Malinche>>
<Holodeck 1, 1845, Day 1>

"I still don't see why we couldn't have just replicated all this stuff," Adam (NPC) stated, looking around at the large assortment of food that had been laid out on the table.

"Its not the same, you know that. Besides, you never complained about my cooking before."

"Well, you were gone awhile," Adam shrugged. "I sort of got used to replicator food thanks to Joey (NPC)."

"Remind me to thank him violently for that later on."

They were just putting the last of the food out on the large pine table. Jason had selected a beach spot that they had found on Maran, white prestine white sand and clear blue water. A mountain range was barely visible on the horizon, across the lake. A massive pine table was set out on a marble landing that was covered by large canvas tent. The temperature was a near perfect 72 degrees. All and all, it looked like and felt like the same place that Jason and Adam had visited on Maran.

"I will be sure too, did you get around to all the department heads?"

"For the most part," Jason nodded. He took another sip of the dark Maran ale that was in his mug. "I still need to meet with our security chief and your boss."

"Lovestreet's a hoot," Adam smiled. "He very much reminds me of Amanda, although there ways are a little different."

"I bet he doesn't threaten patients with bodily harm if they don't do what he says."

"You'd be surprised," Adam smiled. "Sometimes he just threatens to stick them in the holodeck with me and one of my bat'leth sims."

"No thats pretty evil," Jason smiled.

"One does what one must in order to ensure the safety and welfare of ones crew."

"I think you just enjoy saying that."

"Kinda, yea I do. Plus no one else onboard can say they are dating the first officer."

"That could be both good and bad," Jason smiled. "At any rate, try and act charming and everything. Our guests should be arriving any minute."

<<USS Malinche>>
<Steele's Office, 1530, Day 1>

Jason had just left Zeral, finding her to be pleasant and almost charatisically upbeat. Maybe that was a requirement for most people in her position; Jason couldn't imagine one of them being a pessimist. Making a right down the corridor he came to the office of their chief science officer, Aaron Steele. He pressed the door chime.

Upon leaving Atlantis, Aaron had taken along copies of the ancient texts still un-translated. He was working on a translation when the chime sounded. "Enter" he called, setting aside the texts.

"What can the science department due for you sir?" he inquired realizing his visitor was the new XO.

"Just visiting," Jason smiled. "Please sit down."

Aaron did as Jason requested. Jason was trying to remember what information he had gotten from Aaron's bio on the way over. He thought that keeping all of them sorted out in his head was going to be easy, which wasn't entirely the case. It seemed like the whole crew was at the top of their game.

"I'm not here for a snap inspection of anything like that," Jason responded, taking a seat across from Aaron. "Just thought that I would stop by and see how things are going."

Aaron relaxed some at XO?s statement.

?I?m still adjusting to life on the ship and this is my first time as department head but I?m up to the challenge. As I told the Captain, most of the science department wasn?t directly involved with the combat end of our last mission which should be helpful.?

Jason nodded; he knew that their last mission had been pretty bumpy to say the least. He didn't envy dealing with the Borg by any means and the fact that the Malinche managed to walk away at all said a lot about her crew and their captain.

"Also a good point," Jason stated, looking around Aaron's office. He was trying to get a feel for the junior officer, although at the moment his office appeared pretty sparse. He looked across and saw the material that Aaron had been working on.

"Translating?" Jason asked.

?Trying to, the original Alluran language has always proven a challenge.?
Aaron picked up a PADD tossing it to Jason.
?I spent part of the war working for Intel, translating intercepted communiqu? from the Cardassians. With the exception of Atlantis, after the war cryptology & linguistics have become more of a hobby as there?s not much of a demand.?

"Personally, I find that to be a good thing," Jason stated, looking down at the PADD that Aaron had tossed him. "Although I could add another challenge to you if you wanted it."

"What would that be?" Aaron asked.

"I have in my possession some artifacts that we found in the Neral system."

"Isn't that at the edge of known space?"

"Yes," Jason nodded. "I can have them brought down, they contain a lot of symbols...what we think is a language. That?s if you are interested of course."

Was he interested? That was like asking a fish if it liked water.

?Yeah sure I?m interested! I mean, it?s worth a look. I don?t guarantee any success especially as there is nothing to base it off of but it can?t hurt to try.?

Jason smiled, he liked that Aaron appeared so eager to try something new. It looked like he liked a challenge, something that would serve him well in Starfleet.

"I'll have it sent down to you right away," Jason stated. "Anything that you or your department need from me?"

Aaron mentally reviewed his to do list, some which had been acquired from the previous science chief.
"Nothing I can think of at the moment. Thanks anyway."

"Good," Jason state, standing up. "If you need anything you know where to find me. And I mean that, if you need anything at all don't hesitate to contact me. If you'll excuse me, I have to go keep my boyfriend from blowing up our quarters."

The two officers shook hands before turning their attention to other duties.

ON:
<<Main Bridge, USS Malinche, MD01, 2154>>

Will emerged from the turbolift, straightening his jacket as he went. For the second time today, he would be taking command of the bridge. Earlier this afternoon, he had opted to remain at ops for the duration, but now...now the bridge was his. That meant facing up to the center chair. Standing on the upper level of the bridge, just off to the side of the lift doors, he saw the current duty officer getting to his feet.

"The bridge is yours, sir," he said with a smile, "Good luck." Will nodded stiffly and watched as the previous duty shift filed into the lift while the new shift took their positions. Slowly, he made his way over to the command area and stood behind the center chair, placing his hands on either side of the headrest.

"Computer, switch to ship night," he ordered. At his command, the lighting reduced several levels to simulate the night watch aboard the Malinche. On the main viewer, Will watched the stars streak past.

Aaron had set aside trying to translate the artifacts brought in from the Neral system. As he had told Jason, the fact that he was working from scratch would increase the time it took to even get an idea of what the symbols stood for. But like they kept reminding those at the DLI, 'Don't be discouraged. It's often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock.'

Making his way to the bridge he noticed Will standing in the command well. "So skipper, anything on the agenda for the shift?"

Will looked over toward the science station, a hint of surprise on his face, as if he had been pulled out of thought. "Oh," he said after a moment, "Not really...just maintain course and speed." Stepping around the center chair, he stood in front of it, teetering on the edge of actually sitting down.

Aaron observed the actions of the Operations Officer for several minutes as he paced around the command chair. "You plan on standing the entire shift?"

Will resumed a standing position and crossed over to the science station. "What makes you say that," he asked, resting his hands on the edge of Steele's console.

"Ever since I came on the bridge, and presumably since you took command of the bridge you act like you're going to sit down but haven't. The chair isn't just for the Captain you know?"

"Right," Will said, standing up straight and adjusting his uniform. He crossed back over to the center chair, turned to stand in front of it, facing the viewscreen, and sat down. As he did so, a sudden alarm shrilled across the bridge, causing him to jump. "What was that," he asked.

Aaron checked his sensors, silencing the alarm as he spoke. "Power failure on deck 8 section beta."

About that time Ensign Daniels (NPC) got on the comm channel. =/\= Daniels to bridge, sorry about the power. We're installing some upgrades and had to temporarily shut down power. We'll warn you next time. Daniels out. =/\=

Will settled back into the chair and relaxed. "Well, I guess that's our excitement," Will said, "Status report, lieutenant."

"All systems normal, that is aside from the little debacle with engineering. We are currently en route for Ivor Prime at a speed of Warp 6."

<MD02, 0930>

As Aaron was giving his fourth report, a different alarm sounded. It didn't take long to discover the cause. "You're not going to like this but it appears we're heading straight for an Ion storm. The Prometheus is a tough class of starship but not that tough."

Will turned slightly in his chair to look at Steele. "How soon will it reach us," he asked.

"At our current course and speed we shall intersect the leading edge in just over four hours." As he spoke, Aaron was already feeding the data to ops and helm.

Frowning, Will turned his attention back to the main viewer. He didn't have much time to make a decision. Reaching over, he tapped the comm controls on the console to his left. =/\= Bridge to Captain Kersare,=/\=

<Corridor>

Isabel paused; she'd been on her way to speak to Jake about being able to go into Derek's (NPC) quarters without a security officer. She'd started out her bridge shift, but realized she hadn't had the chance to talk to Jake yet and asked Will to take over until she returned. Wondering what was going on, she tapped her commbadge, "Go ahead Bridge."

<Bridge>

=/\=Sorry to bother you, ma'am, =/\= Will continued, =/\= But it looks like we have an ion storm that will be crossing our path.=/\=

<Corridor>

" An ion storm? How bad?" This was not good news; likely it would delay their arrival to Ivor Prime. Isabel hoped an alternate course could be found that wouldn't affect their course too severely.

<Bridge>

=/\= Current reports put it at a level eight, there's no indication it will dissipate by the time we reach it. =/\= Aaron was researching alternative routes as he spoke.

<Corridor>

Isabel shook her head; her conversation with Jake would have to wait. " On my way."

<<USS Malinche>>
<Barrett's Quarters, 09:40, Day 2>

Jason had already discovered one thing that he hated about being the XO; reports. Lots and lots of reports. They were spread all over his desk like they had exploded from the terminal.

"You're going to drive yourself nuts with all that."

Jason turned around to see Adam (NPC) standing there. He was sweating and held his bat'leth over his shoulder, no doubt he had just come from a holodeck session. Adam had always been in great shape but the constant daily training with his bat'leth program had left him more ripped then ever.

"You stink," Jason commented back. "And I need to get through all of these by morning."

"You really should take a break," Adam stated, peeling off his sleeveless tee-shirt and tossing it into the bathroom. "Have you eaten anything yet today?"

"I tried to choke down your chicken thing you made the other night...which by the way was possibly the worst thing that I have ever tasted."

"It wasn't that bad!" Adam shouted back, heading into the bathroom.

"This coming from the man that can and will anything and everything," Jason responded, turning back to his reports.

He was about halfway through the engineering status report when his combadge beeped. He dug around for it among the mess on his desk before he finally managed to find it.

"Barrett here."

"Your wanted on the bridge."

"On my way."

<Bridge, 09:45>

Jason arrived, half expecting the Borg or some equally nasty hostile force to show up. He was surprised to say the least when he looked at the screen and saw a rather nasty ion storm developing. The Hale had no choice but to go through one once, although if he remembered that was only a catergory 4. Even that had caused a considerable amount of damage and just looking at the screen he knew what was out there had to have been at least twice that size.

Kersrae turned and nodded to him as soon as he entered the bridge; Jason returned the nod and headed toward his own seat.

"That looks messy," he said, sitting down. "So, whats going on?"
