Mission 14: Do As The Romulans Do

OFF: Note that in regards to the timing of Shoreleave, Mission 14 Day 1 (when we leave Ivor Prime) is the equivalent of Mission 13 (Shoreleave) Day 11

ON:

<<USS Malinche, Ready Room, Day 1, 0815>>

Mostly well rested after Shoreleave on Ivor Prime, Isabel had arrived at her Ready Room about a half hour prior. Her mind was still partly reeling from the progress Derek (NPC) had made, but she couldn't let it distract her. The message she'd received from Admiral Tavez (PNPC) the day before regarding the Malinche's next mission had been vague at best, but the Admiral was supposed to provide further details shortly.

Picking up her mug of mocha, Isabel took a small sip before setting the mug back down on her desk. From what she could tell, Britney (NPC) and Caleb (NPC) had worked things out, which she had been happy to hear.

Unfortunately, with the sudden departure of Jack Hawkins, the Chief Security/Tactical position remained noticeably empty; she would have to designate one of the others as Acting Chief. For that matter, the same was true in Medical. It had been quite some time since she'd last started a mission sans several Department Heads. Isabel had faith in her crew, certainly, but it would be difficult nonetheless.

An interesting development had been the appearance of Doctor Jule Dormand (NPC) - Alex Dormand's (NPC) wife. Nora had told Isabel that Julie had come seeking more information about Alex. Perhaps the woman would be a good person to stand in as Acting Chief Medical Officer...Isabel would have to speak to her at some point and see if she was interested in the position, temporarily.

"Holtman (NPC) to Kersare. Ma'am, you have a Priority One message from Starbase 386."

Isabel tapped her commbadge to respond, "Acknowledged, Kersare out." Bringing up the display on her terminal, Isabel saw the familiar UFP logo, followed by the face of Admiral Olivia Tavez. "Good morning, Admiral."

"Captain," Olivia replied. "I trust you received my message yesterday?"

Nodding, Isabel said, "Yes, ma'am, I did. You mentioned an escort mission for the Malinche."

Olivia leaned forward slightly, "That's correct. The Malinche will be escorting the IRW Revok to Starbase 386 for the Taevon Summit."

A bit surprised, Isabel raised an eyebrow, "The Revok? Who specifically are we escorting?"

"Senator Vrenik (NPC) will be aboard, along with some aides from the Romulan Star Empire," Olivia replied. "I am transmitting rendezvous coordinates now - you'll be meeting them at the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone at 1100 hours in 3 days' time. Any questions, Captain?"

"Not at this time, ma'am," Isabel said. "The Malinche is set for departure - I'll have us underway shortly."

"Thank you, Captain. Good luck," Olivia smiled. "On a more personal note, Isabel, I might add I was surprised, but glad to hear that you have found Derek... How is he adjusting?"

"It's taking time, but he's been doing better in the past couple weeks," Isabel replied, smiling. "Thank you for asking."

Olivia nodded, "Of course. Tavez out."

Escorting the Romulans to a Summit...didn't sound too difficult, but Isabel knew better than to think it would be easy. Tapping her comm badge, Isabel said, "Kersare to Rho...I need you to find any relevant information regarding the current status of the Romulan Star Empire and, in particular Senator Vrenick and the crew of the IRW Revok. Kersare out."

Isabel slid her chair out and stood, heading for the bridge. Time to go...

<Bridge>

As Isabel walked onto the bridge, she paused at Flight Control, "Ensign Sychorski (NPC), set a course for 178 mark 42. Warp 8...and Ensign, avoid the Typhon Expanse....I think we've all had enough of Expanses for awhile..."

"Aye, Captain, 178 mark 42 minus the scenic route," Josh confirmed.

"Engage," Isabel said as she settled into her chair.

OFF: Tag Rho (and the rest of the crew)! We'll have a Staff Meeting at 1000 on Day 2

ON: [[Schulz's Quarters, USS Malinche, MD01, 0920]]

Will stabbed a link of sausage with his fork, brought it to his mouth, and bit off a chunk, which he proceeded to chew. In his other hand, he held a single PADD, carefully reviewing the list of maintenance logs that had accumulated during their time at Ivor Prime.

For about half the shoreleave time, he had been forced off the ship by the people in his own department. It had felt almost like a betrayal, but they had been correct in the fact that he had needed the break from constant work. By the time he returned on the fifth day, he had been refreshed and ready to go. His first act upon returning to the Malinche had been to put the rest of his team on mandatory shoreleave. Oddly enough, Lieutenant Commander Peters had done the same thing in engineering, meaning that the second half of shoreleave had been rather quiet aboard the ship.

Despite his best efforts to the contrary, his mother had insisted on speaking with him personally about his recent promotion to lieutenant. She was not able to settle for hearing it from his father; she had to 'see' it for herself. Then, rather than the brief conversation Will had enjoyed with his father, his mother insisted on going on and on about how proud she was, wondering how he was doing, hoping that he wasn't being overworked. Admittedly, he hadn't been around to visit them in person in quite some time, but he thought that maybe she was overdoing it just a little. Finally, after nearly forty-five minutes, under the premise of needing to get back to work, he managed to convince her to end the conversation.

With a smile, Will recalled how she had tried to keep the conversation going with "just one more thing". He finished off his sausage link and set the fork on his plate so that he could reach for his glass of orange juice. It had taken some experimentation to find just the right pulp content with his replicator. Thankfully, the strain on the computer systems during their past mission had had little effect on his hard earned replicator selections.

Having finished his breakfast, Will set aside his PADD and collected the remains of his meal. He rose to his feet and crossed over to the replicator, where he dispensed the used dishes into the slot. As the dishes vanished in the sparkle of the replicator, Will turned back to his desk where three of the dozen PADDs he had started with still remained. With a sigh, he decided that perhaps he could multi-task a little. Selecting one of the PADDs, he started for the door. It would probably take him a good fifteen minutes to get through the particular report he had in hand, so why not also get in a good, fifteen minute walk at the same time.

<<USS Malinche, Intel Office, Day 1, 0821>>

"Kersare to Rho...I need you to find any relevant information regarding the current status of the Romulan Star Empire and, in particular Senator Vrenick and the crew of the IRW Revok. Kersare out.”

She grinned, Romulans…oh for a chance to see what’s behind those shifty eyes and between those pointy ears. Alexis stepped out of her office and looked around before making her announcements. “Listen up. We’ve got to get a report together for the Captain concerning the Romulans.” There were a couple of sighs, which she expected. Not everybody enjoyed the Romulans. However, there were several smiles, which Alexis was happy to see. It meant that she wasn’t the only one who was curious about the Romulans. “Ensign Derrin (NPC), I want you to take Petty Officer Firvan (NPC), and Crewman Jornic (NPC) and put together files on Senator Vrenick and the crew of the IRW Revok. If anything pops up that looks suspicious or out of the ordinary for Romulans, mark it and tell me when you deliver your reports.”

Derrick responded, “We’ll get on it right away.” He pointed to Firvan and Jornic, “With me, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”

Alexis spoke as she walked over to one of the main consoles. “Tilden (NPC), Jol (NPC) we’re going to gather information and intel regarding the current status of the Romulan Star Empire. But first off, I have a question for each of you. Tilden, have you ever been on an infiltration mission within the Empire? Jol, has any of your previous hosts been privy to or part of anything regarding the Empire?”

Neither of them expected those questions, but they were feasible. If they had any information, it could be helpful. Tilden, being the higher ranked of the two, answered first. “It was not as interesting as one might think. I was part of a three-man team that was to infiltrate a Romulan outpost long enough to get SI’s desired information. The mission took about three weeks. We were surgically altered to look like Romulans…it made a little bit easier to gain enough trust to access their databases. I really can’t give you anything that would help in a mission like we’ve got now.”

“Fine,” replied Alexis. “But, if we need Romulan security codes for this mission, I suspect I can count on yours to still be active?”

Tilden smiled and executed a mock bow, “Subcommander Novak at your service, ma’am.”

Alexis nodded and turned towards Jol. “Well?”

“I’m sorry Lieutenant, but none of my previous hosts have ever had any contact with the Romulans.”

“None whatsoever?” asked Alexis.

“No ma’am. It was three hosts ago that I left Trill and joined Starfleet. Most my experiences since then have been with the Klingon Empire. I’m afraid I may not be of much help this time.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, Chief. Intelligence agents can always be a help. You never what might happen. This is Starfleet after all.”

Chief Jol grinned.

“Now,” continued Alexis, “you two start digging up that info on the Empire. I have something to take care of, then I’ll be back to help.” Alexis walked into her office and grabbed the PADD with the supply requests from earlier and tapped her combadge.

“Lt. JG Rho to Captain Kersare.”

<Bridge, 0830, Day 1>

Isabel tapped her commbadge, "Go ahead, Lieutenant."

<CIO Office>

“Captain, I have the complete supply request ready that we spoke about before shoreleave. I’d like to bring it up and get it submitted,” Rho replied.

<Bridge>

"I'll be on the bridge, bring it up when you're ready," Isabel said. "Kersare out."

<10 minutes later>

The doors swished closed behind Alexis as she entered the Bridge. Twenty-fourth century and you’d think we could make doors that didn’t ‘swish,’ she thought. A few heads turned, but things went on as normal. Alexis walked to where Captain Kersare was seated. “Captain, here’s that supply request we spoke of earlier. It’s not something that must be taken care of right away, but I wanted to get the process started as quickly as possible.” Rho handed the PADD to Kersare. “I also have a question.”

Taking the PADD, Isabel nodded, "Thank you, I'll look it over and send the request through for you, or check with you if I have any questions." Pausing, she then replied, "Go ahead, Lieutenant."

"I want to make it mandatory for all Intelligence personnel to carry an energy knife on their persons at all times...similar to the Security personnel carrying a phaser. I know they're not involved in ship's security, but it would be a decent last-minute back-up in case. Those little devils are excellent close-quarters-combat weapons. Of course, they would also be required to pass whatever psych evals and such that security officers have."

Isabel contemplated Alexis' request, "Will you personally ensure that any who carry the energy knives are up to date on their training with them?"

"Absolutely," answered Alexis. "I will train them myself. And anyone who does not pass with a perfect 100% score will be dealt with accordingly. No extreme measures, though. Just a few extra duties and two additional duty hours per day of solid, one-on-one training." Alexis paused. "They are effective, but can be dangerous in the hands of an ill-equipped and untrained officer. I intend to ensure that there are none of those in this Intelligence Department. Whether it deals with energy knives or day-to-day operations."

"In that case, feel free to implement it," Isabel answered. "Have you thought about making someone Acting Assistant Chief?"

"I hadn't until now." Alexis skimmed through the personnel files and latest performance reports in her mind.

Isabel nodded, "You don't need to decide right now, but think about it and let me know."

"Yes ma'am, I will. And thank you. If there's nothing else, Captain…?" Alexis didn't think there was anything else, but one could never be too sure. After all, the job of choosing an Acting ACIO had never crossed her mind.

"That's all," Isabel confirmed. "Keep me informed as to the status of the training you'll be giving, if you would."

"I will," answered Alexis. She turned and headed back to Intel.

<Intel Department>

Alexis entered and asked about the progress. Derrin (NPC) and Tilden (NPC) brought what they had so far up to her for a review. Alexis scanned the information and handed the PADD's back to their respective persons with a nod. She told them to continue on their work and gave them a deadline by which to finish. She walked into her office and started putting together a training roster and progress report template for the energy knife quals.

<<Derek's Quarters, 1315, Day 1>>

Following Shoreleave, the restrictions originally placed on Derek (PNPC) had been, for the most part, lifted. He was now free to roam about the ship when he pleased, but basically had the same restrictions as a civilian - no access to the bridge, engineering, or other important areas. Having been stuck in his own quarters for so long, Derek didn't mind the restrictions.

Still, he tended to spend a good part of his time in his quarters regardless. Derek had quite a bit to think about, and the solitude of his quarters was generally best for that.

Sitting at the small table in his quarters, Derek slowly thumbed throw a photo album Isabel had left for him. Everything seemed vaguely familiar, but his memories were still...foggy...unclear. While he'd spent most of his life as a human apart from the Borg and most of his memories were from times before being a drone, the Collective mind and its thoughts and memories had been very oppressive. The Collective had taken him over, completely, in that time.

Derek knew, deep down, that he couldn't entirely blame himself. When he was one of many in the Collective, he couldn't resist and there weren't reminders of his previous life. Besides, how could he have fought the Collective?

When he had first seen the StarFleet uniforms and, later, Isabel, some of his memories had started to resurface. Derek shuddered to think what his existence would have been had he not been sent with the other drones...if he'd remained in the Cube. He knew he should put it behind him, but the whole thing was overwhelming - a hard thing to forget.

He slowed as he neared the wedding pictures. Closing his eyes, he tried to remember what the day had felt like. Warm...sunny...a small crowd of people.... Shaking his head, Derek opened his eyes again. He still couldn't quite shake the cobwebs from his mind. When he looked at the pictures, they were familiar, but he couldn't see them in his head. Couldn't remember what he had been feeling.

Then again, he wasn't really experiencing feelings and emotions anyway. When he saw Isabel, he recognized her, but the feeling of love that he knew he should have wasn't there. Perhaps it was just surpressed as well, but he couldn't feel it.

Derek bowed his head - he felt guilty. Guilty for not being able to feel, guilty for not being able to give Isabel what she deserved - what he knew she wanted.

Would the feelings ever come?

<<Holodeck 1, 1930, Day 1>>

Frustrated and deciding to use his newfound freedom, Derek(PNPC) had wandered to Holodeck 1 in the evening. While his personal memories had seemingly hit something of a roadblock, bits and pieces of his StarFleet training were coming back to him. Truthfully, he'd rather have his memories of his family and Isabel back, but he had considered that perhaps by piecing together some of his time with StarFleet, the rest would come.

With those thoughts driving him, he'd walked into the Holodeck and let his eyes survey the currently empty room. Remembering the computer would need parameters, Derek said aloud, "Computer, I want to do some training.... give me a wooded area with 2 clearings, one opponent, and furnish us both with a type 1 phaser."

"Acknowledged," the computer replied. A moment later, the scene Derek had described shimmered into existence.

As Derek looked down, he saw that a type 1 phaser was now clutched in his right hand. His eyes slowly adjusted to the darker lighting caused by the canopy created by the trees. Many of the trees were rather tall, but there were also bushes and shorter trees mixed in - a good variety.

Seeing something move out of the corner of his eye, Derek immediately ducked down behind a bush, keeping his eyes glues to the area he'd noticed movement. It was an area of shorter trees and bushes - not ideal for him seeing whatever it was in them.

Staying in a crouch, Derek moved around the bush he was behind, trying to get a better angle. Seeing a flash of gold, he aimed and fired. As soon as the sound of his phaser firing could be heard, Derek saw a deer run from behind its hiding spot and race through the trees to a clearing at the top of a nearby hill.

Derek shook his head and turned to renew the hunt of his prey when he was suddenly struck in the shoulder with phaser fire. Sucking in his breath, he quickly dropped back into a crouch, eyes darting around quickly. Obviously he was rather rusty if he'd allowed someone to come up behind him and catch him off guard.

He quickly saw his enemy this time, however, darting among the trunks of the taller trees. Bringing his phaser up, Derek watched the opponent - seemingly a human - to extrapolate where he was headed. Seeing another grouping of small trees, Derek aimed and waited a split second before firing.

Hearing a grunt, Derek rushed over to his opponent - perhaps 50 feet away. The man was on the ground, laying on his back, a simulated phaser burn present right over his heart.

The scene shimmered away and Derek was back in the familiar Holodeck. "At least I'm not completely out of practice... Computer, restart simulation, this time with three opponents."

It felt good to be doing something proactive - to have a goal. With grim determination, he readied himself for his next battle.

ON: [[Mess Hall, USS Malinche, MD01, 1220]]

Joey Summers (NPC) passed through the large double doors into the crowded mess hall and surveyed the room. He should have expected it to be so busy around lunchtime, especially with the order for all personnel to return to the ship having been given. Carefully, he made his way toward the far wall where the replicators were located, pausing to excuse himself as he slipped past people who were already seated.

Once he managed to place his order, a small tray containing his meal materialized in the dispenser slot. Joey lifted the tray out and turned back toward the room, looking for an open seat. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw someone waving to him. He turned his head to look in their direction and realized that it was Sam and Kerl...and they had an open seat. After a few moments of careful navigation, Joey finally reached their table and set his tray down in front of the open chair.

"Busy in here today," he commented as he took a seat and started unfolding his napkin.

"Isn't it always," Sam (NPC) asked, looking around at the crowd. Joey shrugged as he grabbed his fork and started poking at his lunch.

"How are things going in operations," Kerl (NPC) asked conversationally.

"They're going," Joey replied, "Lieutenant Schulz got promoted, but other than that, it's been pretty quiet since the end of our last mission. Why?"

"Kerl was just telling me how he thinks things are going to get interesting again," Sam said cryptically.

"Don't they always," Joey asked with a smile, echoing her earlier statement.

Kerl shook his head as if he couldn't understand what Joey found so funny. "Scuttlebutt says we're gonna see Romulans on our next assignment," he explained in a hushed voice, not that he needed to with all the noise around them.

"Romulans," Joey asked incredulously, glancing toward Sam, who shrugged, "What makes you say that?"

"Well, we're already pretty close to the border," Kerl pointed out, "and there's that big conference or whatever that's supposed to be happening on Starbase 386. I'm guessing it'll be our job to escort one of the Romulan delegations to the conference."

"Wait, what do you mean 'one of'," Sam asked, confused, "They're sending more than one?"

Kerl shook his head again. "You haven't been keeping up with the latest news, have you," Kerl said with a sigh, "Supposedly there are going to be at least two Romulan delegations...maybe three."

"How do you know all this," Joey asked, eying Kerl.

"When you're in my line of work you...hear things," Kerl replied with a cryptic smile.

Sam sat in silence for a moment, simply shaking her head. "I don't really care what it is, so long as I'm not running around treating heaven knows what for twelve hours straight," she said with a short laugh. Joey nodded in agreement. More work was probably the last thing Lt. Schulz and the operations department needed at this point.

<<USS Malinche>>
<Sickbay, 1930, Day 1>

"Computers this day and age just don't shut off," Jason stated, wedging himself back under the terminal in sickbay. "Are you sure that you didn't shut it down or anything?"

That prompted several very colorful metaphors from Adam (NPC) in Klingon. Jason smiled to himself, Adam had commed him about two hours ago when the terminals in sickbay started acting up. Will was on his way to take a look at them but Jason decided to give the operations chief a rest; besides it was a good excuse to spend time with Adam and seeing as how they were about to take on a mission that was going to be as dangerous as the last one, he wanted to spend all the time with him that he could.

"I am beginning to seriously doubt your skills," Adam grunted.

"Shut before I break your jaw."

"Promises, promises."

Jason scooted out from underneath the terminal, he had concluded early one that it wasn't a programming problem but most likely a hardware problem, he tossed Adam a burned out gel pack before grabbing a new one from the repair kit that he brought with him.

"Oh, I suppose that you are going to blame me for this."

"Nope, the ghost of 'Not me' did it," Jason stated, disappearing under the terminal again.

"You're not funny!"

Jason smiled and went to work installing the gel pack.

<<Conference Room 1, 0955, Day 2>>

Isabel stood, gazing out the viewport as she waited the remaining five minutes so she could begin the staff meeting. Some were already there, a couple had not arrived yet. She hadn't received any information from Alexis yet, but expected that her Chief Intel Officer would be providing a report during the meeting.

Peters entered the Conference Room a little less than 5 minutes before the briefing was due to start and noted that very few of his fellow officers were already there. With a shrug, he picked a seat near one end of the table and set down his PADD and coffee mug. He was interested to see what their next assignment would be. Hopefully something nice and easy for Engineering...

Nora was quietly settled in her chair, her thoughts far away as she mentally divided up her tasks for the day. Counseling had been relatively quiet and, much to Nora’s relief, it had been no problem at all to slip away to attend the staff meeting.

Aaron had no sooner stepped off the shuttle when he was informed of the staff meeting. As he entered the conference room, he briefly locked eyes with the Captain as he gave a slight nod. He wanted to let her know that despite the events of the past week he would continue to perform his duties as Chief of Science onboard the Malinche and was grateful for her allowing him some time off.

Alexis had spent the past few hours going over the information she'd compiled from everyone's work. That information was contained in the PADD now laying in front of her. Some of it was highlighted, indicating important information or things of which to be aware.

Will entered the room to find that he was one of the last of the senior staff to arrive, despite his best efforts at arriving early. He promptly found an open seat next to Peters and sat down, placing his PADD on the table before him.

"Wonder what they've got in store for us this time," Will asked Peters.

"I dunno," Peters replied, "But I'm hoping that for once I don't have to keep the ship together with chewing gum and baling wire this time."

"Now where would the fun in that be," Jason smiled, taking his seat.

Seeing that everyone had arrived, Isabel moved to the head of the table, then pulled the chair out, taking a seat. "Good morning everyone, I hope you enjoyed your shoreleave."

Nodding, Will did not feel the need to say anything. Other than having to fight with his staff for the first four days, shoreleave had gone pretty well. He'd even sneaked in an opportunity to speak to his parents. All in all, it had been a welcome change from the all-night brainstorming sessions he and Peters had been leading during their previous mission.

Shoreleave was shoreleave for Alexis. It was good to get off the ship, but even better to come back, considering the recurring dreams when she was idle. The one interesting part was getting Pront's message, which she still had to review and reply to. But that could wait. There were more pressing events taking place.

Smiling, Isabel said, "As I'm sure you're all aware, the Malinche has been given its next mission. For those of you who were on the bridge, you already know that we're headed for a location just outside the Romulan Neutral Zone."

Peters quirked an eyebrow at that statement, but didn't comment. Going to the Romulan Neutral Zone did not fit his definition of an easy mission for Engineering by any means.

Compared to the previous missions, dealing with the Romulans seemed easy for Aaron. The Neutral zone was bound to hold some interesting scientific facets to study while security and command were making sure the Romulans weren't trying to pull a fast one.

"Starfleet is having us rendezvous with the IRW Revok to escort them to Starbase 386 for the Taevon Summit, which will begin in about a week," Isabel explained. "We should arrive at the rendezvous tomorrow around 1100 hours."

Alexis spoke up. "According to SI…and my source…things had been pretty quiet in the Empire up until three months ago. That's when information leaked to the populace that a representative was being sent to the Summit. Chatter says that a Reman guard is the primary suspect for the leak. That chatter is, of course, from the Romulans. Uncharacteristically, the Remans have yet to challenge that allegation or offer any defense. To me, that has caution written all over it. Whatever the case, the powers that be are playing up the leak to draw attention away from the fact that someone is attending a summit. Then they blame the Remans for the leak and the Remans haven't said anything so far. And to top it all off, the population is upset because a Romulan rep is coming here to talk."

"Why should they be upset," Will asked, "The Elyshans pose just as much a threat to them as they do to us. I would think, especially given the rumors that have been going around about the internal affairs of the Empire, they'd be eager to discuss the situation with the rest of us."

"Romulans, as a rule, are generally never eager to discuss anything," Jason said. "With them around you know that things are going to get interesting."

"Commander T'maekh (NPC) is the Commanding Officer of the Revok and Senator Vrenik (NPC) is the delegate from the Romulan Star Empire," explained Isabel, folding her hands on the table.

Alexis turned to Isabel, "If I may Captain," and nodded toward the screen.

Isabel nodded, "Go ahead."

Alexis tapped a button on her PADD and the screen lit up with a picture of Romulan. "This is Senator Vrenik. Intel doesn't have much on him at this time. We do know that he is quite extreme in Romulan politics. According to a source, he's one of the few Senators that can get the entire Senate angry at him at the same time." Alexis paused. "Apparently his thoughts and beliefs are a tiny bit different that those of everyone else," she said sarcastically.

"Only a little," Will repeated with a chuckle, "What makes his ideas so different?"

"The Romulans have been isolationists for decades," Alexis began. "Their secrecy, technologically and politically, have given them the upper hand on several occasions in their dealings with the Federation. With the Elyshans looming on their border, SI suspects they want to use the same tactic with them. Then in walks Senator Vrenik. He doesn't believe it will work this time. He believes that Elyshans aren't as 'peace-seeking' and tolerable as the Federation. Whether he's right or not regarding the Elyshans, we have yet to learn. He tells the Senate that the days of isolation and secrecy must come to an end if the Empire expects assistance from the other quadrant powers in dealing with the Elyshans. He uses this turn of events to accomplish what he's been striving for years to do; lose the isolation and secrecy. We know that Vrenik is very passionate and outspoken with his ideas. The Romulans consider him to be…how do humans put it…cavalier. They don't seem quite ready to give up what the Senator is proposing. Even for the safety of the Empire."

"Surely they would have seen the benefits of our alliance during the Dominion War," Will said, "One would think they might have opened up a bit more after what happened with the Remans."

"I am guessing that there are some that are, like this Vrenik," Jason stated. "But let's not forget the senate and the Empire have existed for decades in that sort of environment. Changing their minds about this will take awhile and that's assuming that his objectors don't get to him first."

Isabel spoke up, "Until Senator Vrenik is safely at Starbase 386, it will be our responsibility to ensure they don't. We'll need to keep a close eye on things to prevent it. There may be a traitor or assassin on their vessel already..."

"Well that will be a refreshing twist," Jason sighed. "Romulans trying to kill each other, its a wonder that the whole Empire hasn't fallen apart."

"Not sure if I'd call it 'refreshing' with us in the middle, Commander," Peters replied. "Who do I talk to about getting security guards posted at all access points to Main Engineering?" Peters couldn't help but remember that the Romulans had tried to steal the prototype USS Prometheus prior to joining the alliance against the Dominion.

"I've had my share of dealing with the Romulans, those that oppose his ideas aren't going to go down quietly, I'm guessing that Vrenik is making more friends then enemies. I know that its no secret that several senators have ties between Senators and high ranking Romulan Admirals. I doubt that it will come to an all out civil war but it could get rather bloody if anyone one of them decides to push it," Jason said.

"That may be so, but a good portion of the Romulan military backs Donatra (NPC). Regardless, we'll have to be cautious," Isabel said.

Jason added, "If they have an assassin aboard their ship already then there isn't a whole lot that we can do about it. Aside from advise them, unless you somehow convince him to be transported aboard the Malinche, which, let's face it, is going to take a lot of fancy talking. Until then all we can do is keep a keen eye on everything, I recommend we stay at yellow alert."

Isabel nodded, "Perhaps if we invite them over for dinner we can get a better idea of what we might be dealing with... We should all be prepared for anything - intruders on the ship, sabotage, an assassination attempt aimed to blame us... Security will certainly be increased. We have approximately one day to do what we can to prepare - once you feel your department is ready, I recommend letting them take it easy...once we rendezvous with the Romulans things will no doubt get interesting. Dismissed."

Alexis made a few notes concerning the training roster and such. Then, she started compiling the newest information from her teams. It all looked pretty standard; not what she wanted. She decided if she was going to get any new and current information regarding the Empire and Senator Vrenik, she had to get it from within the Empire.

<Minutes later>

"Ensi…oh…Lt. JG Rho, it's been a while," said Commander Loizeaux (NPC). "Congratulations and how's the Malinche working out for you?"

"Very well. I've recently been promoted to Chief Intelligence Officer. And this couldn't be a better crew to work with, sir. I have a question concerning any current operations within the Romulan Star Empire."

"Always right to the core with you isn't it? Well, what are you looking for?"

"Does Starfleet Intelligence have anyone close to the Senate? If so, I want to know what they have on one Senator Vrenik and on the internal affairs of the Empire."

"You know as well as I do that I can't release names, but I can get you the information you want." Commander Loizeaux turned away a moment. "It looks like…yes, we have some information regarding both inquiries." He looked back at Alexis. "I'll send you what we have."

"I'll be expecting it soon, then."

"Good. And whatever you've gotten yourself into, be careful. From what I've read of the reports, things are a little…edgy on the other side of the Zone."

"Understood sir, Rho out." The screen went blank and slid back down inside the desk. Alexis was always careful where Romulans were concerned. With the info from Loizeaux on the way, Alexis decided to sit back and take a quick breather. Everything was about to get interesting.

<<USS Malinche, Deck 1 Corridor, Day 2, 1047>>

Captain Kersare had dismissed the staff meeting and Alexis was on her way back to brief them on what was happening when her communicator beeped.

"Ensign Derrin (NPC) to Lt. Rho."

"Go ahead Derrin."

"You've got an incoming message from Starfleet Intelligence."

"I'm on my way, Rho out."

Derrin, she thought, he would make a decent Acting ACO. Look what he's done since I came on board. Maybe he's the one. Alexis would have to give it some thought, but not right now. Now, there were more pressing matters to tend to, like why is SI contacting her? On a side note, since the escort mission is to 386, maybe she would have a chance to touch base with Pront about that last communiqué.

<<Corridor, 1400, Day 2>>

Following Shoreleave, Britney (NPC) felt more relaxed, yet excited. The previous mission - especially Caleb's (NPC) puzzling behavior - had taken a toll on her. Having her questions put to rest and assured that Caleb was, in fact, Caleb had lifted her spirits. The time they'd spent together had been nice. And the kiss...well, it left her heart racing.

She couldn't help but smile as she made her way through the corridor. After the staff meeting, the Captain had given her a few errands to run, which she was trying to get completed quickly. On the bright side, since the Romulans were staying on their ship, she didn't have to worry about finding accomodations for them on the Malinche.

However, Isabel had asked her to set up a dinner that would include the Romulan Senator and the ship's senior staff. That had thrown her...she wasn't quite sure what to ask the cooks to prepare for the meal. She was hoping they could offer some suggestions when she arrived.

Going through her mental checklist, Britney remembered she should check on the visiting doctor, Julie (NPC). The woman's presence was a surprise, really, and Lieutenant Zeral had asked her to find some guest quarters for the woman. The Malinche didn't have many guests, so it hadn't been too difficult. Julie seemed to be fairly self-sufficient, if a little somber, so Britney had let her be, but perhaps it was time to check in on her. That could be next on her list after checking on the dinner preparations.

<<Mess Hall>>

Entering the mess hall, Britney was glad to see it was mostly empty. The lunch crowd had cleared out - likely within the last hour. PADD in hand, Britney made her way over to the cooks with a smile, "Good afternoon."

"What can I do for you, Crewman?" The head chef looked at her, not unkindly, having helped her previously.

"Well, the Captain would like to have us host a dinner for Senator Vrenick (NPC) and the IRW Revok Senior Staff once we've rendezvoused with them," Britney told him.

The chef nodded contemplatively, "Do you know where she wanted it served or what time?"

"Her preference was Conference Room 2 at 1800 hours, if that's alright," she replied, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

"Not a problem...what about the menu?" The chef started jotting down notes on a PADD, looking up when Britney didn't reply right away.

Feeling her cheeks flush Britney said, "Well...I was hoping you could help with that... The Captain left it up to me, but I'm afraid I'm not sure what to put on the menu. I played a waitress, and at times, a cook on Direidi, but I can't say I ever prepared something for Romulans and StarFleet crew - particularly not together."

Smiling at Britney, who was obviously a bit embarrassed, the chef nodded, "Don't fret, I'll take care of it. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

"No," Britney said, shaking her head. "I think that's all I need, Chef. Thank you." Returning his smile, she turned and headed out of the Mess Hall. She slowed slightly, wondering if she should've gotten the chef's recommendations on a meal she could make for Caleb, but decided it could wait and continued on her way.

Peters walked into Engineering and looked around. His staff was, as he expected, quite hard at work. With a smile, he walked towards the center of the room, mirroring his actions of nearly a week and a half before. "I need everyone's attention please!"

As the other engineers gathered close, Peters collected his thoughts and suppressed the grin of child-like glee. "OK, folks, we've just received our new orders. Tomorrow we will be rendezvousing with a Romulan Warbird and escorting Senator Vrenick to Starbase 386 for a conference being held there."

Looking out, Peters saw that his people were taking the news in stride, also as he had expected. After Direidi and Borg and ghosts, not much would phase this group. "However, the Captain wants everyone to be in top form tomorrow as we'll have some Romulans aboard as guests. Some of you may know that the Romulans tried to steal the USS Prometheus during her trial runs before they joined the Dominion War. So, we'll have to be on the lookout for spies and saboteurs.

"To that end," Peters continued, "I want all of you to take the rest of the day off, and come back tomorrow morning bright-eyed and ready for anything." A murmur of dissent started, and Peters held up a hand.

"This is not open for discussion. All of you, out!" Peters made shooing motions with both hands and the other engineers slowly started drifting towards the doors. Once he'd made sure they were all out, Peters turned back around with a grin.

"Computer, begin music playlist Peters One. Random order. 50% of maximum volume."

Aaron had arraigned for a meeting with the entire science staff onboard the Malinche in preparation for their upcoming mission with the Romulans. Once everyone had arrived, he started the mini-briefing.

"As you all know, we have left Ivor Prime in order to start our next mission. We have been ordered to escort the IRW Revok to Starbase 386 for the Taevon Summit. From the sounds of it, we will remain at yellow alert for the duration of this mission. I don't expect this to have any major effects on the normal operations of the science department but one can never be too cautious, especially when dealing with the Romulans."

He paused to allow the group to process the information and formulate any questions. Soon one of the junior enlisted spoke up.
"You said there wouldn't be any major effects. What effects can we expect to see?"

"Mostly just an increased security presence, especially during occasions when the Romulans are onboard the Malinche for whatever reason. I am also requesting that any sensitive projects be either put on hold or that you take extra precautions to secure the research and the subsequent data."

There was some grumbling from among the ranks which Aaron soon put a stop to.
"I don't like it any more than you do, but given our rocky relations with the Romulans and their current political situation, I feel this is the best course of action to take. If you don't like it feel free to take it up with the command staff. I'd like to give you more information on our mission but at this point that's most of what I know. If there are no more questions, you are dismissed."

OFF: A little insight into the Revok....

ON:
<<IRW Revok, Day 2, 1600>>

Seated in the command chair, Commander T'maekh (NPC) was quiet, hands resting gracefully on the arms of the chair. He was calm and collected, as usual. True, the whole situation had him more on edge than normal, but he'd countered it with more meditation.

He'd been a little surprised that he and his ship had been chosen to carry Senator Vrenick (NPC) and his aides to the Summit. It wasn't something the Revok was normally assigned to do, but in the end it didn't really matter. Someone had to do it, after all, and once it was over they'd be assigned another task, like always.

The more intriguing part was the Senator himself. T'maekh couldn't say he agreed with the Senator's viewpoints - or at least, not all of them - but he knew many Romulans felt the same as Vrenick. In his opinion, some of their ideas were rather short-sided, but he was no diplomat and preferred to stay out of it.

His First Officer, however, was a different story. Kayrel (NPC), to the untrained eye, seemed to be composed - almost icy, but T'maekh had always felt there was another layer to her - that under the surface she was really boiling. Based on the private discussions he'd had with her, he knew her to be passionate about her causes - almost to a fault. When it came down to it though, she reliably got the job done.

Kayrel was behind and to the right of him presently, hands clasped behind her back - her usual stance. Though she said nothing, T'maekh knew her mind was racing.

"Subcommander Kayrel," he said authoritatively.

She glanced down slightly, "Yes Commander?"

"How are our guests?" T'maekh stood and turned to face her.

Kayrel smirked, "In their quarters, researching apparently. I've had Security keeping an eye on their activity."

T'maekh raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.

"As you're well aware, Commander, Senator Vrenick has a very clear stance on issues and has therefore made some enemies...we wouldn't want any harm to come to him while he's on the Revok," she replied, turning her eyes to his.

"I doubt the Empire would appreciate harm coming to him at all," T'maekh answered. He wasn't sure if she was implying knowledge of potential attack, but he also knew she wouldn't simply come out and tell him.

She gave a brief nod, "Of course."

Perhaps it was time for T'maekh to pay a visit to the Senator, just to be sure... "Subcommander, you have the bridge," he announced, before heading for the guest quarters.

ON:
<<Ready Room, Day 1, 0930>>

During Shoreleave, Isabel had received a message from Nora regarding a Julie Dormand (NPC) - apparently the widow of Alex Dormand (NPC). At the time it had been unclear if Julie had come to simply speak with Nora or if she would be staying longer - perhaps needing a lift to the nearest Starbase or another ship. So, at the time, Isabel had been content to wait and see what would happen.

Now, however, the Malinche had orders to depart for her next mission. Isabel had, therefore, asked Julie to come see her and invited Nora as well, though Nora's presence wasn't technically required. It would perhaps make things go faster - Isabel could get an assessment from Nora as to Julie's state of mind.

While she waited, Isabel pulled up Julie's service record and browsed through it.

Julie was feeling remarkably better. By some miracle, she had been able to get some decent sleep for the first time in months. Slowly approaching Captain Kersare’s Ready Room, she paused to straighten her uniform, taking a good look at the Bridge as she did so. She’d never been on a Prometheus class ship before and she was fascinated by some of the more technical aspects of the ship.

Nora stepped off the turbolift to see that Julie had already arrived. She hadn’t seen the doctor since their meeting after her arrival, and she was relieved so see that she was looking much better. “Good morning,” she greeted cheerfully. “You’re looking well this morning.”

“Thank you,” Julie smiled. “A good night’s sleep can do wonders for a person. Shall we?” Seeing Nora’s nod, Julie pressed the door chime.

Looking up from the display, Isabel replied, "Come in."

Julie followed Nora through the door. Captain Kersare didn’t look particularly frightening, though she couldn’t really say she’d been very nervous about meeting her.

Seeing the two women enter, Isabel stood to greet them, offering her hand to Julie as well as a smile, "Good morning, Doctor."

“Captain Kersare,” Julie said, shaking her hand and returning her smile. “It’s a pleasure to be aboard your fine ship. She's a real beauty.”

"Thank you," Isabel replied. "Please, have a seat. I must say I hadn't expected that you would come find us at Ivor Prime."

Taking a seat beside Nora, Julie glanced at the counselor before she answered. “To be honest with you, Captain, I hadn’t really expected it of myself either. When Counselor Zeral contacted me to tell me you had found the remains of my husband’s ship, I found that it somehow wasn’t enough. I had been waiting for some time for any news of Alex or the Rome, and once I finally heard something, I was...well, I couldn’t rest until I was sure I knew the whole story.”

Isabel knew that feeling all too well...except she hadn't gotten any further information other than reports that her husband was dead from the remaining away team members Of course, she'd later learned that he hadn't died. "I can certainly understand that, Doctor... I trust Lieutenant Zeral has filled you in?"

“Yes, ma’am, she has.” Truth be told, Julie was still struggling to understand all that Nora had told her. The idea that Alex had been here, on this very ship, was comforting in some respects, but knowing that he had been in someone else’s body was a truth that was somewhat hard to swallow. “I’m still thinking it through, to be honest,” she admitted, “but I’m grateful to know what happened. It’s comforting to finally have some answers.”

"I'm sure it is," Isabel replied with a gentle smile. "What are your plans? Should we drop you off at Starbase 386, if your ship is in the area we could rendezvous with it....."

“That’s an interesting question, Captain,” Julie said, sighing. “Officially, I’ve taken an extended leave of absence, but my assignment on the USS Visionary was a temporary one. I find myself in between ships at the moment, so to speak. Dropping me off at the next Starbase should do just fine.”

Isabel nodded, "We can certainly do that." Hesitating slightly she added, "I hope I'm not being too forward, but if you're interested, we could use someone in Medical - even just temporarily. I'm afraid our last CMO was transferred off and we've been without one."

Nora smiled to herself at the Captain’s suggestion, having secretly hoped that she might make such an offer to Julie. She found that she rather liked the doctor and felt that she would make an excellent addition to the Malinche.

Lowering her gaze to the floor, Julie took a moment to think on Captain Kersare’s offer. It wasn’t something she had expected, but it did seem like a fine idea. Although she was still coming to terms with the loss of her husband, she had decided quite firmly that she would not wallow in despair or hide away from the world while she quietly mourned him.

Finding her voice again, she calmly replied, “I think I’d like that, Captain. I would be pleased to serve on your ship.”

Hearing Julie's response, Isabel smiled, "I'm very glad to hear it Doctor. Is there anything you need, or any questions you have?"

“None that I can think of. This is all happening a little fast,” Julie admitted. “If and when I think of any, I’ll be sure to ask you or Counselor Zeral.”

“Counseling is just around the corner from Sickbay,” Nora interjected with a smile. “Feel free to drop in any time with your questions or comments.”

Isabel had a good feeling about Julie - perhaps being on the Malinche would give her a chance to heal as well as helping out the Malinche's crew. "Very good. Welcome aboard, Doctor."
