<<Holodeck 1, Day 2, 1300>>

Technically she'd already put it off for far too long, but Isabel knew she had to make a decision. It was unfortunate, but a new Chief Security/Tactical Officer had not been transferred over to the Malinche as of yet. In her opinion, it was rather bad timing - she would have much preferred to have one aboard while escorting a Romulan vessel. However, she knew the current Security/Tactical members were good and, as a bonus, already acquainted with the ship.

Having heard that the Malinche would be responsible for escorting a Romulan senator to a conference aboard Starbase 386, Anthony (NPC) felt that some time in the holodeck was in order. He'd let himself slack a little over shoreleave and it was time to get back in shape, especially for a mission such as this one. They still didn't have a new department chief, so he had been shouldering most of the burden of administration, though in all honesty, it was more of a team effort.

While there were some who liked to train in violent combat programs or tactical training scenarios, Anthony preferred a more tranquil setting. When he was younger, his parents had encouraged him to take up martial arts, both for the physical activity and the mental discipline. More often than not, he could be found training with a martial arts master, rather than a battle-crazed Klingon warrior.

Pausing outside the door to the holodeck, Isabel straightened her uniform before stepping inside.

Ducking to the left, Anthony blocked a blow from his sparring partner, then feinted left. At the last moment, he swung right and managed to get under his opponent's defenses. He grabbed the woman's arm and flipped her around so that she ended up face-up on the mat.

At the sound of the holodeck doors, Anthony looked up. His partner took the distraction as an opportunity to knock his legs out from under him and a moment later, he landed face-down on the mat next to her. "Gotcha," she said with a smile.

Isabel moved closer, a slight smile on your face, "Mr. Stone?"

Anthony slowly raised his head from the feet he could see all the way up to the face of the captain. "Captain," he exclaimed in surprise, "Computer, freeze program." There was a chirp as the scene around them froze in place. Immediately, the security officer got to his feet, brushing himself off and trying to at least look presentable.

"I was...not expecting you, ma'am," he said, somewhat flustered.

"Yes, I know...my apologies," Isabel said. "I take it you were training?"

"Er...yes," Anthony replied, glancing back toward the frozen form of his opponent, still smiling from on the mat, "I find most of the other training programs to be a little over the top, ma'am."

Nodding, Isabel said, "Understandable. How have things been going since the departure of our latest Chief Security/Tactical Officer?"

"Pretty well," Anthony said, nodding his head slightly, "We've got a good system going and we all kind of share the load." He smiled slightly, but he had the feeling things weren't going to be able to go on like that indefinitely. The captain wouldn't have come down to visit him otherwise.

"I was hoping we would have one before we left for this mission, but unfortunately that didn't happen," she explained.

"I didn't think it my place to ask about that, ma'am," Anthony said, finally giving in and moving to grab his towel from the bench. He patted his face and set the towel aside to grab his water bottle.

Isabel watched him quietly before saying, "Well, I imagine you and your colleagues have been wondering..." She hesitated slightly before continuing, "You've been with the Malinche a good while, Mr. Stone. What do you think of those in the department?"

"They're all pretty good people to work with, ma'am," Anthony replied, "Sam...I mean...Lieutenant Weaver (NPC) has been around awhile too. Have you spoken with her?"

Nodding, Isabel replied, "Yes, I spoke with her earlier. She suggested I speak with you, which I'd already planned on doing... I was wondering if you'd be willing to take on the duties of Acting Chief Security/Tactical Officer."

Anthony blinked in surprise. He had not been expecting a visit from the captain, much less for such a purpose. For a moment, he didn't know what to say to that. "I...I'm honored, captain, that you would think so highly of me," he said slowly. If he had to be honest with himself, not that much would change if he accepted the captain's offer. As acting chief, he could choose to maintain the current system of operations or make a few changes as he wished. All in all, it couldn't be that bad, could it?

Isabel smiled, "You've done well here and I think you're the right person for the job."

"I accept," Anthony said with determination, "Thank you, captain."

"I'm glad to hear it; you're quite welcome. Should you wish to choose an Acting Assistant Chief for yourself, please do so and just let me know who it is," she replied. "Is there anything you need from me?"

"You wouldn't happen to have the key to the office, would you," Anthony asked jokingly. The question had been completely off the cuff, so he wasn't sure if the captain would understand that it was somewhat of an in-house joke.

Isabel gave a slight grin, then answered with a straight face, "I'm afraid I don't....that's the first test for the Security/Tactical Chief, getting into the office."

"Well, then I shall be sure not to disappoint," Anthony said proudly. He paused, waiting to see if that was all that the captain had for him or if there would be any kind of immediate briefing.

Nodding, Isabel said, "I will have the appropriate information and a summary of what was discussed at the Staff Meeting regarding our mission sent to you. Basically, we're escorting the IRW Revok to Starbase 386. Senator Vrenick and a couple aides will be on board and are travelling to the Taevon Summit."

"Sounds like a pretty high profile mission," Anthony observed. So what he had heard drifting about the scuttlebutt of the ship was true. As acting chief, it would no doubt be his job to ensure that nothing happened while on his watch and to be prepared for anything that might happen. On the one hand, it seemed like a tall order to fill, but on the other...it sounded fun.

"Yes. As I said, the vital information will be sent on to you... We are a bit concerned that either there will be an assassination attempt or we may be attacked by either Elyshans or perhaps the Romulan Imperial State, so we need to be prepared," Isabel noted.

"You can count on me, ma'am," Anthony said with confidence.

ON:
Malinche/ Counseling Suite
Day 1/ 15:20 hrs

This was the first time Aaron could remember entering the counseling suite entirely on his own accord, but seeing as he had barely slept in the week since the Sentry was officially declared missing he knew it was time to seek help.

Having established Dr. Zeral was available, he entered her office.
"Afternoon Doc. Hope your shoreleave was better than mine."

Rising from the couch and setting the PADD she had been reading down, Nora greeted Aaron with her usual welcoming smile. “Well, if it isn’t Lieutenant Steele. I haven’t seen you in quite some time. Please, have a seat.”

"No offense, but I find that a good thing; at least on a professional level."
Aaron took a seat as instructed.
"Thanks for seeing me on such short notice."

“Of course,” Nora replied, sitting across from Aaron. Counseling had been rather quiet, all things considered. Aside from the occasional psych eval, the day had been progressing slowly. “What can I help you with today?”

"I assume you've heard about the disappearance of the Sentry and Tempest."
Aaron knew it was a big news item but wasn't sure if Nora had kept up with the news.

Nora nodded, frowning slightly. “I had heard something of it, yes.”

"What you wouldn't have picked up from the newscast is that my sister Sarah is, was, stationed on the Sentry. I was able to attend the memorial service for the crew but it doesn't seem to have helped me cope with the loss."

Stunned and saddened by this development, Nora took a deep breath before replying. “I am so sorry for your loss, Aaron. I had no idea.” Watching him closely, she added, “I have learned from personal experience that memorial services are sometimes only the first step in finding any closure. It can take some time before you find a way to cope with the loss of a loved one.”

In his mind Aaron replayed the highlights of the service before formulating a reply.
"I'm not sure it helped at all. I haven't gotten a single good night's sleep since I heard the news. I think part of it is not being able to talk with each other. We were always real close and kept in regular contact."

Nora didn’t doubt that he was right about that. Since the death of her parents, she’d kept in more or less close contact with both of her brothers. She couldn’t imagine what it would be like if she were to suddenly lose that treasured contact with one or both of them. “If I recall from your file, you have several other siblings. Have you spoken with them recently? Shared your thoughts and feelings with them about your sister’s disappearance?”

"I have spoken with the rest of my family. We talked with each other over subspace on what was basically our own private memorial service. We were able to laugh and cry together which helped some." Aaron chuckled a little.

"During the war, we made a pact that if one of us didn't make it back that the other wouldn't become one of those people that couldn't cope with the loss. Guess I messed that one up."

Nora smiled sadly. “This is possibly the last thing you want to hear now,” she began cautiously, “but it really is only natural that you find coping with the loss of a loved one difficult. There is no tried and true way to face this sort of loss. It may not seem possible now, but with time, you will find a way to overcome your sorrows concerning your sister, or at least be able to live with them.”

"I know it's natural, I've dealt with loss before, but this is the hardest to cope with. Any suggestions? With this mission with the Romulans and all I can't afford to be distracted?"

“Yes, I do have one,” Nora said after a moment of thoughtful silence. “You say you’ve dealt with loss before, so perhaps this will ring true for you. Don’t try to suppress your grief; it will only intensify it in the long run. Talking about your feelings may not seem ideal to you, but it will help if you talk to family and friends about how you feel.”

Aaron was noticing a pattern with counselors; they weren't generally one's to mask the truth which he appreciated.
"In that case I have taken the first step without even knowing it."
He didn't want to bring up the next topic but felt it important.
"I was hoping to avoid this, especially as I've only been off the SSRI for a few weeks. However, as I mentioned I have had trouble sleeping and the normal remedies don't seem to be working, perhaps a sedative is in order?"

As a general rule of sorts, Nora usually shied away from the use of medical drugs when treating patients if at all possible. However, Aaron's request was certainly reasonable, and she was hopeful that he wouldn't have to use a sedative for very long to help him sleep.

“I see your dilemma,” she said, nodding slowly. “I’m going to recommend a low dose of improvoline. It should relax you enough so that you can fall asleep. I’d also like to see you again in a few days to see how you’re doing. In fact, I hope that you know that you're welcome to come and see me at any time. I can always lend a listening ear, as your counselor or just as a friend."

"Thanks Doc. I'll make sure to keep you in the loop as a friend and a counselor. Now if you'll excuse me I have to make sure my department is ready for our visitors."
Aaron left the counseling suite, still unsure of how he would cope but with the knowledge that he had friends aboard the Malinche that would help him through it.

ON: [[Security/Tactical Office, USS Malinche, MD02, 1420]]

The doors to the dark office hissed open, allowing a rectangle of light to be cast onto the deck from the lit corridor outside. "Computer, lights," Anthony (NPC) ordered. There was a chirp and the light level in the room promptly rose to normal levels. From where he stood in the doorway, Anthony surveyed the room. He had been in it many times previously, but it was different this time. This time, it was his office. Well, technically, he was only filling it until a replacement chief could be found, but it was still nice to think that, for the time being, it was his office.

Stepping across the threshold, Anthony allowed the door to close behind him. He slowly made his way over to the desk and took a seat, testing to see if the chair was comfortable. Surprisingly, it was. A small smile tugged at the corners of Anthony's mouth as he reached forward to activate the desktop terminal. No sooner had the display come to life than Anthony heard the sound of the doorchime.

Who could be calling already, he wondered to himself, The captain couldn't have told that many people...

"Enter," he called, quickly shutting off the terminal so that he wouldn't be distracted.

"Afternoon," said Alexis as she walked through the doors. "Are you the Acting Security Chief?" she asked the young man behind the desk.

"I am, as of about an hour ago. Lieutenant JG Anthony Stone," Anthony replied, looking up at the woman in Intel gray, "Who's asking?"

"Lt. JG Alexis Rho," she answered, "Chief Intelligence Officer. I've got a couple of security concerns with Romulans being onboard for a dinner and all. Do you have a few minutes?"

"Certainly," Anthony said, wishing he had had the chance to read the captain's briefing before such a meeting. Instead, he'd just have to make sure he followed along very closely. "What can I help you with," he asked.

Alexis began, "Number one, I would feel much better if two security officers could be posted outside the Intel offices at all times; absolutely no Romulans and authorized personnel only. I've done what I can to lock out Intel databases and systems from being accessed from anywhere on the ship…unless of course you have authorization. As far as the physical security, I believe that's your area of expertise. Number two,…" she paused a second. Alexis didn't need her Ullian abilities to add. "You weren't in the staff briefing since you just got this position an hour ago. Have you seen anything or been read in on what's happening?"

"No, unfortunately, I wasn't," Anthony replied, "The captain was supposed to send me the details, but you showed up before I could read them over. However, if there are Romulans aboard, I agree that we should post guards in sensitive areas of the ship. The bridge and main engineering are the two major ones that come to mind, though I think I could spare a few personnel to keep an eye on the Intel office. I don't want too much of a show of force, though...they are our guests, after all."

"True," conceded Alexis. "If you can spare an extra, I would be happy with just one, then. Whoever's on duty inside could help if a problem arose. And hopefully, none will."

"I'm sure I can spare someone," Anthony said. Without knowing more about the situation, he couldn't give a definite answer until he'd had a chance to go over things.

"Here's a very quick rundown: we're escorting a Romulan delegation to Starbase 386 for the Taevon Summit. Tomorrow, as you might have figured out already, the Malinche will be hosting a dinner for the delegation. Captain Kersare wants us to be prepared for anything – sabotage, intruders, and maybe an assassination attempt. If I'm not mistaken, she said that there could be a traitor or assassin on the Revok already. In which case, it seems the only thing we can do is just be prepared and alert."

"I suppose so," Anthony mused, hand inching toward the activation control for the desktop terminal. He really wanted to look over the captain's briefing so he'd have a better idea of what was going on for himself.

"I know you'll want to get that briefing report, so I'll be brief with the second point. It's not as much as a concern as it is an offer. If you ever need any extra help with anything, a bit of extra intel information, an interrogation, someone to sit-in, whatever…just let me know. I think both our departments could benefit from working together."

Anthony nodded to show that he understood the woman's offer. "If I think of anything, I'll be sure to let you know, lieutenant," he said. He wasn't sure if he would be needing to interrogate anyone in the near future or that he'd need 'intel information', but it was nice to know that another department head was willing to work with him if he needed it.

"I've taken up enough of your time. Enjoy the reading."

Once Rho had left, Anthony turned to the display and activated the screen. Sure enough, the captain had already sent the briefing information to him. It wouldn't take him long to read through it and then he could start on the duty assignments. He'd also have to confer with the team leaders later to see if they had any thoughts to give. It certainly wouldn't be a boring first day on the job, that was for sure.

<<Bridge, Day 3, 1050>>

Still a bit concerned, but remaining calm as she sat in her chair on the bridge, Isabel's eyes moved around the room slowly. The bridge crew seemed to simply be going about their business like it was any other day. She guessed that at least some of them were at least partly unnerved at the idea of meeting the Romulans and escorting them to the Summit, but they weren't showing it.

Technically the Malinche had arrived at the rendezvous point five minutes prior, so now they were simply waiting.

Isabel wondered if the Revok was still travelling to the rendezvous or if, perhaps, they were already there, cloaked. She much preferred the former option rather than the latter, and considering the nature of the mission, Isabel hoped that were true. Not much would be gained by the Revok being cloaked, other than perhaps throwing off her crew and unsettling them.

Minutes passed, until finally Isabel heard a couple of the consoles beeping. Looking down at her own display, she noted the indications that the D'deridex class vessel had indeed arrived. Her eyes moved to the main viewer, already showing the view ahead. As Isabel watched, the Romulan warbird shimmer into existence slightly to port.

"Ma'am, we're being hailed," Ryan (NPC) announced, turning in his chair.

Nodding she said, "On screen." Isabel straightened her shoulders, sitting tall.

"Captain Kersare," T'maekh (NPC) said matter-of-factedly.

Isabel watched him carefully, "Commander T'maekh."

"I trust you haven't been waiting long," the Romulan said.

Shaking her head, Isabel replied, "Not at all, Commander. It's a pleasure to meet you."

T'maekh gave a slight smile, "And you as well, Captain. I don't mean to be hasty, but I believe the Senator would appreciate it if we were underway as soon as possible."

"Of course; I imagine he's anxious to get to Starbase 386," Isabel said. "I certainly don't expect any trouble, but one can never be too sure. In any event, I'd like to invite you and your Senior Staff, in addition to Senator Vrenick (NPC) and his aides, to the Malinche this evening for dinner."

Pausing a moment, T'maekh looked over at his First Officer, who didn't seem to move. "I believe we would be delighted, Captain. What time?"

"How about 1800 hours? I'll be sure to have someone meet you in the Transporter Rooms - most likely Lieutenant Commander Barrett and Lieutenant Zeral, if you don't mind Commander," Isabel said.

He nodded, "We will look forward to it."

Turning to Josh (NPC), Isabel said, "Send the Revok the information they'll need to stay on course with us and coordinate with their Helm Officer."

"Aye Captain," the Ensign replied quickly, tapping at his console.

Addressing T'maekh once again, Isabel nodded towards her Flight Control Officer, "Ensign Sychorski will send the appropriate course information to you and we can be underway within the next fifteen minutes, if that's alright."

T'maekh nodded, "Absolutely, Captain. T'maekh out."

The transmission ended, Isabel leaned back in her chair. One of the more difficult parts was out of the way now at least. At least the Commander seemed reasonable. Of course, she hadn't met the Senator yet - that would likely be an interesting experience...

<<Bridge, Day 3, 1050>>

Alexis wanted to be on the Bridge for the initial contact with the IRW Revok. That, and she needed to coordinate the database and system lockouts for the Intel department from Mission Ops. Call her overprotective or just plain paranoid, but she was not taking any chances in her department. Besides, she was getting the feeling that no matter whether on a ship, a planet, or an operation, most people looked at Starfleet Intelligence personnel with a shadowy curiosity; never being quite sure if there was a hidden agenda. She smiled at that thought. It was really how she preferred it to be.

Alexis finished the lockouts quickly and turned toward the viewer when the other consoles started going off. She watched as the Revok decloaked and paid careful attention to the conversation between Captain Kersare and the Romulan Commander as well as to the interior of the Revok. At least, as much as she could see.

After the conversation, Alexis turned her attention back to Mission Ops. She sent a quick message to Ensign Derrin's (NPC) console back in the office to instruct Crewman Jornic (NPC) to get a report together summarizing the Revok's crew, particularly Sub-Commander Kayrel, for her to read later. She didn't even move when her Commander looked at her. Alexis' purpose was that she wanted to refresh her memory about who was sitting at the same table as she was.

Her console beeped a reply from Ensign Derrin. He said that Jornic was working on the summarization and that he would send it up to Mission Ops as soon as it was complete. Alexis remembered that Jornic was on deck next for the energy knife training this afternoon. She decided to postpone it until tomorrow, after the state dinner. Hopefully that would be a better, less stressful time for everyone involved.

Alexis noticed a sense of relief coming from a lot of people on the Bridge. Mostly the 'sighs' and relaxed postures gave it away. But it was only the beginning. She almost expected Nora's office to pretty busy after the dinner. She thought about paying another visit to the Counselor. Her dreams, or nightmares about her father and brother's death, were starting to come more often at night. Even if there was nothing Nora could do about it, maybe actually talking to someone would help. She shook it off and came back to herself.

<<Lower Shuttlebay, Day 2, 1500>>

As ready as she would be for the Romulans, Isabel had finally had a chance to look over the crew transfer notices from Ivor Prime. Britney (PNPC) had sorted through them initially and left them in Isabel's Ready Room. With the Acting Chief Security/Tactical Officer and Acting Chief Medical Officer in place, Isabel had decided to head down to the Shuttlebay to try to find the new Shuttle Maintenance Specialist.

Truthfully it had been awhile since Isabel had last been in the Shuttlebay - when she'd been an Engineer it used to be one of her main stops. As the doors closed behind her, Isabel looked for the Caitian. Finally she spotted her under one of the Type 9 Shuttles and walked over.

L'randil heard the footsteps approach but took no notice as she was involved in pulling a relay out of the power section underneath.

"Ensign N'rass?" Isabel didn't want to startle her, especially while she was working under the shuttle, but knelt down next to the Caitian so she didn't have to speak as loud.

The engineer rolled over from her back to her side to see who it was. She did a double-take when she realized it was the captain, then rushed up to attention with her less than clean paws. "Yes, Sir er Ma'am?"

"Either is fine, Ensign. I didn't mean to startle you; I'm Captain Isabel Kersare as I suppose you've guessed," Isabel said with a friendly smile. "I've been trying to get caught up with the various transfers that occurred at Ivor Prime and I understand you're one of them."

"Yes, Ma'am. I am still quite new here but always at home under a shuttle." She joked. "I really did not expect you to come down here. Captain Tran (NPC) didn't come down to the flight deck for anything."

"Glad to hear it." Isabel chuckled, "Well, everyone needs to stretch their legs sometimes... And before I was a Commanding Officer, I was an Engineer."

L'randil smiled. "Good to know. I like a CO who knows the bolts too." She walked over to her tool cart and picked up a spanner to wipe off with a rag. "What was your specialty?"

"It does come in handy from time to time," Isabel replied. Thus far she liked L'Randil - the Caitian seemed fairly personable. "Warp and power systems were my main specialties, but once you get to Assistant Chief or Chief Engineer, you tend to learn even more about some of the other aspects as well."

"Someday I'll get that far. I thought for a long time that I wanted to be a flight deck engineer, but part of this transfer was to try to move up from that. These little things are still home to me."

Isabel nodded, "We can certainly use a good maintenance specialist - we've not had one for some time and I'm sure it shows... Right now we don't have an official Assistant Chief Engineer, so if you do well, perhaps that position will be in your future. Have you met our Chief Engineer yet?"

L'randil smiled sarcastically at the thought. "Yes they show the typical signs of Fleet maintenance. It takes a touch sometimes to get these relays tuned right." She picked up one of the damaged relays to look at in the light. "I haven't talked to him yet, but he seems to be a busy man. I have received orders from him however from time to time."

"I'm sure you'll have a chance to meet him soon," Isabel said. "And I also have the feeling you get things whipped into shape around here. Have you gotten settled into your new quarters?"

"For the most part." The Caitian responded, leaning on the side of the shuttle. "It's a bit roomier than the 'Thud'. They made a lot of sacrifices on that ship to house the fighters. Sometimes I thought the cockpits had more room than my bunk." She felt comfortable and relaxed with her as the CO.

"What class was your previous ship? The Malinche isn't the largest ship out there, but she is a good one," Isabel smiled. Is there anything I can do for you, or any questions I can answer?"

"Oh, sorry Ma'am." L'randil replied. "The Thunderchild was an Akira class fighter carrier. Fairly large compared to this one but mostly hollow for the flight decks." Then she motioned up to the Malinche's bay. "This one is a lot smaller here but at least we get some elbow room in the rest of the ship." The ensign thought for a moment. "I can't think of any questions at the moment but I'll keep it in mind. Thank you."

"Of course," Isabel said. "I don't want to keep you, but it was nice meeting you, Ensign."

"Alright, Ma'am. Thanks for coming down here." She saluted and smiled in a way that had been trained into her for years.

Isabel returned the smile, "My pleasure. Good luck and welcome aboard." As L'Randil headed back to work, Isabel watched the Caitian for a moment before turning and heading for the door. So far, so good.

<day 2 1900 hrs: Lower Shuttle bay>

L'randil walked back from the replicator with a cup of coffee to her latest project. The type 9 shuttles were being plagued by power regulation problems, so the caitian considered it her personal mission to correct it.

Padd in hand and coffee in hand, she sat down on the shuttle's left nacelle and leaned back. This problem had been going on for some time before she had arrived on board, so they hoped she could fix it. She sighed and let the hand with the Padd fall to her leg, not sure what to try next.

A few moments later, another crewmate walked over. "Is everything alright, Ensign?" She asked, sitting down next to the Caitian.

"Well, Ma'am..." L'randil responded. "I have worked on this power system for years and I can't seem to figure out what's wrong. I have never hit this kind of a wall before." She looked dejected.

The other officer looked at her then took the Padd. "Oh, this is a type 90.4 regulator. They are rather problematic even on the full size ship versions. It is a wonder they still use the design." She handed the Padd back to L'randil. "Lieutennant C'eltor(npc), power systems specialist, at your service." She smiled at the caitian.

"Ensign L'randil of N'rass, shuttle services." She shook hands with the lieutennant. "Power specialist, how handy. Any ideas then?" She asked, sipping her coffee.

"The phase variance on the constrictors has to be within .001 microns for starters, but I see that's taken care of. I see you have taken care of the usual list." She scrolled the Padd. "You have exceded the normal troubleshooting lists, good for an ensign. I do not see readily what you need. I will take this information and think about it if you would like."

"Yes, Please do." L'randil responded. "I'll keep working on it. Take the Padd if you need to. I have the numbers in my head." She smiled. Her memory was gifted in that sense.

"Very well, Ensign L'randil of N'rass, I will see what I can do."

"Please, call me Randi if you would. We are on the same team, I like the personal flavor."

"Very well, Randi." The El'aurian smiled. "I wish you luck." With that, she bowed and walked out of the bay. The ensign slid down off the nacelle back to the table where the removed relays were setting.

"Just a matter of time, you little things." She smirked and pointed at them, muttering to herself. She sat down on the stool and proceded to dismantle and look them over again to see if the puzzle would present itself.

ON: <L'randil's Quarters, Day 3, 0500 hrs>

The shuttle specialist rolled over in her bed, slightly awake. The issues of the power system were bugging her, as the hard puzzles tended to. Then she sat up, leaning back on her arms with a wide eyed smile.

"AHA!" She blurted and grabbed a PADD to enter her thoughts. "That's it. I have to get this approved! Yes." The Caitian was almost purring with excitement. She hurriedly got her uniform on and rushed to the shuttle bay to check the theory. Once convinced of the findings, she took a sample and ran up to see Cmdr Peters.

<Chief Engineer's office, 0700 hrs>

The door chirped and L'randil walked through to see Cmdr Peters. She had not yet met him in person but her adrenaline rush from finding the fix made her forget that fact. She walked up to his desk, holding a PADD and a modified relay.

Peters glanced up over his mug of coffee and blinked. "Good morning, Ensign N'rass," he greeted her, managing to remember the name only because there were no other Caitians in his Engineering staff. "Can I help you?"

"Sir," She started. "I believe I have a fix for the power system on the type 9 shuttles." She handed him the PADD, "Here is the data on it."

Peters took the PADD and looked at it quickly. It looked like something that might work, but he needed time to sort it out first. "Alright, Ensign," he said after a moment, "this looks like it might work, but I'm not fully awake yet. Want to run through it for me? Slowly?"

"Sorry, Sir." She apologized, trying to calm down a little from the high of figuring it out. "Well, the plasma relays have been giving us variances which have been doing all kinds of bad things on the shuttle power regulators. You probably know that already. Anyway, I figured out they were all in spec according to Starfleet Engineering, but the material was degrading microscopically from age. They haven't used this composite in shuttles of this performance level before and I think this is why. Who knows why they did it but it needs to be made of tricarbon silica oxide alloy and it will work." She said with barely contained enthusiasm.

"I'm impressed," Peters admitted. "I hadn't even thought to check the relays. Monosilicate Ceramics are used a lot in that kind of stuff, but you're right, it's not usually used in anything that needs the kind of efficiency levels that our shuttles do."

She nodded. "I had to figure out a similar problem when I was working on the mining shuttles. They had to stop using the same material because they were failing and stranding ore transports over it. I didn't believe it when I saw Starfleet tried to use it again. Only thing going is it is a lot easier to replicate than TSC."

Peters nodded. Tri-Carbon Silicates were nearly as complex as organic tissue, and the average replicator couldn't manage more than a close approximation. They'd have to use a food replicator to get the material, then build the units by hand, or nanite. "Looks like we have some work to do, then, Ensign."

L'randil smiled. She was glad he approved of her findings. "I will get started on it immediately, Sir." She stated and paused. "Thank you."

Peters merely quirked an eyebrow. "For what, Ensign?"

"I have had a lot of foreman disregard me for my improvements. It means a lot that you are willing to back me up. I won't let you down."

Peters smiled. He wasn't going to say it, but if he'd worried about her letting him down, he'd have done everything he could to block her assignment to his engineering staff in the first place. "I'm sure you won't, Ensign. You've already figured out something that's been confounding the rest of the Engineering crew for a long time."

"Thank you, Sir." She nodded and turned to walk out then stopped. "Sir, can I ask you something?"

Peters resisted the temptation to inform her that she just had asked him something. Instead he nodded, saying, "Certainly."

"I know it breaks protocol but could you call me by my given name. L'Randil. In my culture we don't use last names and it still feels awkward to me."

"If I can get used to Bajorans putting their family names first, I think I can manage calling a Caitian by her given name," Peters replied after a moment of thought. "Consider it done."

L'randil smiled. "Thank you, Sir." She nodded and exited the room feeling glad she had taken the time to visit.

=/\= Lt. Steele, you have an incoming subspace message from the Callisto. =/\=

=/\= Send it to my office please. Thanks. =/\=

Aaron knew who to expect on the other end of the line and was glad for a chance to talk with his friend and former shipmate. "William, good to see you again. How have you been?"

The two had become friends at the Academy and served together on the Thunderbolt during the War, albeit in very different positions with William serving as a fighter pilot, and Aaron as a Science/Intel officer. Upon cessation of hostilities, Aaron stayed on as a scientist while William left to pursue his original goal of becoming an engineer.

"I've been good, I think our new CO has been finally broken in. We've had some interesting missions. I heard about the Sentry, you have my sympathies. Otherwise, I hope things have been good for you as well."

"They have. I am now a full lieutenant as of about a week ago and our current mission is quite intriguing. You've heard about the Taevon Summit I assume?"

William acknowledged that he was familiar with the Summit so Aaron continued.

"The Malinche has been tasked to escort the Romulans to the Summit. We're hosting them for dinner later today. Once they reach the Summit I'm sure we'll get another mission but we don't yet have the details."

"Better you than me. I was never much for formal dinners and such." William reached for a PADD on his desk.
"I don't have a lot of time to talk, so I'll get to the real reason I called. We have come into possession of an artifact with some writing on it. So far no one has been able to produce an accurate translation so I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a crack at it."

"Sure thing. Send me a copy and I'll see what I can do. I'll call you if I make any significant progress."

William punched in a few commands and a copy of the artifact was soon in Aaron's possession. "Thanks. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm needed on the bridge. Huxley out."

As the familiar Federation logo filled the screen. Aaron picked up the PADD with the copy of the artifact and got to work on a translation.

<<Counseling Suite, Day 2, 1300>>

Derek (PNPC), a little nervous, had walked into the Counseling Suite five minutes prior. He'd checked in and was told that the Counselor had been notified and would come get him when she was ready. For at least the fifth time that day, Derek wondered if he should bring up his idea. The counseling sessions overall seemed to be beneficial, but this was different. His thoughts were interrupted when the door opened.

Nora was feeling relieved that she had finally found some time to meet with Derek. Her intentions had always been to dedicate more time to visit with him, but good intentions only went so far, she was quickly learning. Now that Counseling was experiencing some normalcy again, she had the chance to meet more regularly with patients and crewmembers.

Stepping out of her office to greet Derek, she smiled warmly as she approached him. “It’s good to see you again, Derek. How are you feeling today?”

"Good afternoon," he replied, standing. "I am....alright."

“I’m glad to hear it,” Nora said, careful not to stand too close to him lest she should make him feel anymore uncomfortable than he seemed to be feeling now. “Let’s go to my office then, shall we?”

Following her in, Derek found the closest seat and sat down. He sat rigidly and waited for her to begin.

“I feel I should apologize for not having visited you sooner,” Nora mentioned as she sat in her favorite chair, conveniently situated just across from Derek. “You’re looking better than the last time I saw you. Are you feeling a little more comfortable aboard the Malinche?”

"No need to apologize, Doctor," Derek began. "I am feeling a little more like...my actual self, I suppose."

“I have to confess that I’m very impressed with the progress you’ve been making,” Nora said, having glanced over his medical file before their appointment. “I imagine that it can’t be very easy for you, readjusting to a life you had been forced to leave behind.” She paused, smiling somewhat apologetically. “If I’m ever being too blunt, please let me know,” she commented. “I want you to be as comfortable as possible when you meet with me.”

Derek watched her quietly before replying, "I do not think someone could be much more blunt than the Collective, Counselor. And I did spend the majority of my life away from the Borg. Not everything has come back to me...but I'm remembering more."

Nodding, Nora asked, “What sort of things are you remembering?”

"Well," he began slowly, "I remember some of my life before the Collective... Some about my family...and Isabel."

“That’s a promising start,” Nora commented, her thoughts going to Captain Kersare. In truth, she worried about Isabel sometimes. She was a very capable Captain and Nora certainly considered her a friend by now, but she imagined that this situation was a heavy burden to bear emotionally.

Looking away, he said quietly, "Counselor...I remember some of those things...but...but I don't remember the feelings..."

Slowly exhaling, Nora briefly frowned in puzzlement. “You don’t remember any feelings at all, with either your family or Isabel?” she asked gently, looking for clarification.

Derek frowned, trying to figure out how to explain it to her, "Well...I know what I was supposed to feel at those times. And I remember some of the feeling, for some memories...but not as I think I should, if that makes sense."

Nora nodded, waiting silently for him to elaborate.

"The Borg are very black and white, very logical. There were no feelings there," he said. "I would not have thought it would prevent me from feeling them now, or remembering how I felt at different times though."

“Truthfully, neither would I,” Nora admitted. “Although it could be that it’s just going to take more time for those feelings or the memory of those feelings to come back to you.”

Derek nodded quietly, "I hope so, Counselor. I hate to think I am disappointing people by not having them. It is important to me that I get them back..."

“Of course you’re not disappointing anyone,” Nora was quick to assure him. “When I was first informed that you had been...recovered, we’ll say, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. That you have come so far and so quickly is nothing short of astounding, and if anything, you’re exceeding my expectations. I think you have every reason to hope that those feelings will return to you in time.”

Managing a hint of a smile, Derek replied, "I suppose time will tell. I appreciate that you feel I've been progressing well - I was not sure..." Hesitating a bit, he went on, "Counselor, what would you think about me helping out in Security/Tactical? I have been doing some training in the holodeck, but was hoping to get your opinion."

Pausing for a moment, Nora considered his suggestion. “Actually, I think that’s a fine idea, Derek. It’s very healthy to have tasks and responsibilities, and I would say from your service record that you’re clearly qualified. So long as you feel that you’re ready, and of course with the okay from Medical, I would have no problem with recommending you for some sort of active duty.”

"I can go over to Medical at any time..though I imagine I or we should also speak with the Captain and Chief Security/Tactical Officer about it, yes?" Derek looked at Nora. Perhaps it would be good for him to get back on active duty.

“Of course,” she agreed, rising from her chair and going over to her desk to select a PADD from its surface. “I’ll make a note of my recommendation in your file, and I’ll be happy to meet with anyone who has further questions in person.”

Derek nodded, "Thank you Counselor."

<<USS Malinche>>
<Barrett's Quarters, 1545, Day 3>

Jason's eyes were swimming by the time that he got up form his desk and headed to the bathroom. He splashed cold water on his face, trying his best to wash away the tiredness and grime that he knew was starting to overtake him...and he still had dinner with the Romulans to sit through. He was pretty sure that falling asleep at the dinner table was not something that was looked well on in the annuals of diplomacy.

He headed back to his desk, not only was he working the latest personal evaluations, looking over the latest reports from the security teams about the Romulans, and had some information that Maran Intelligence wanted his opinion on. He wasn't sure what kind, if any sleep he was going to get tonight. Matters seemed to be more complicated since they were still down a tactical chief...at least one with any real experience. Stone was fine for now but they needed a replacement.

The doors opened and Adam (NPC) walked in, carrying what appeared to be several PADDs. He looked so engrossed in them that he about tripped over the coffee table.

"You look like hell," he finally stated.

"That's it, you are so sleeping on the couch tonight."

"You really aren't all that funny, you know that."

"Actually, yes I am. What are you working on anyways?" Jason asked. "You looked heavily engrossed in those PADDs that you were reading."

"New treatment possibilities for the Andorian flu, looks pretty promising so far but they are still in the trial phases. Shouldn't you be getting ready for that dinner that you are supposed to be at tonight?"

"I really hate these things," Jason sighed, standing and heading back towards the bathroom.

"Oh come on now, it could be worse," Adam stated, following him into it. "I mean you could not have this adorable face and ripped body to come home too."

Jason sighed heavily, switching the sonic shower on before heading back into the bedroom to grab his dress uniform.

<<IRW Revok, Senator Vrenick's Quarters, Day 2, 1620>>

T'maekh, worried about the Senator's safety, was on his way to pay him and his aides a visit. It hadn't seemed necessary to provide them an entire office, so Vrenick had simply gotten one of the larger temporary quarters where they could meet. Since T'maekh hadn't seen the Senator since his initial arrival, he wasn't sure how that had gone over. Pausing outside the door, T'maekh rang the chime.

Eyes narrowing, Vrenick halted in midsentence, clearly put out at having been interrupted. “Enter,” he called out curtly.

Hearing the reply, T'maekh stepped inside, just far enough that the door swished closed behind him, "Good afternoon, Senator." The Romulan also gave a nod of acknowledgment to the two aides seated with Vrenick.

Valara nodded respectfully to the Commander before turning away again. With her eyes she returned to her work, reading over a few pertinent documents while the Senator dealt with their visitor. She took her duties as an aide to Senator Vrenick very seriously, and she wasn't about to pause in her work just because the Commander decided to pay a visit.

Marek turned his head towards T'maekh just long enough to acknowledge his entrance with a nod. Although he had expected better accommodations for their work, he hadn't said anything about it. He waited to see how the Senator would react to the visit, or interruption as he saw it.

“Commander,” Vrenick replied neutrally, visibly thawing a bit as his annoyance apparently dissipated. Rising from his chair, he took a step towards T’maekh, his hands clasped behind his back. “I’ve not yet had the chance to thank you for our accommodations. They are quite…adequate.”

T'maekh looked at the Senator. The man was likely used to spacious quarters and a spacious office, but it was a relatively short journey and they'd only been notified a couple hours prior of their orders. "I am pleased you think so, Senator. I'm sure your usual accommodations are quite impressive compared to what my vessel has to offer."

Marek saw how cordial everyone was being and decided it was best to leave his opinions to himself. Not wanting to break decorum, he nodded toward Commander T'maekh, agreeing with Senator Vrenick. He returned to his work, leaving the Senator and Commander to discuss…whatever.

“So long as there is room enough for our work, I see no reason to complain,” Vrenick told T’maekh simply. He did not bother to add that he was very much looking forward to the accommodations awaiting them at their destination, which he was quite sure would far outshine their current temporary lodgings.

T'maekh nodded; it seemed Vrenick was certainly a diplomat through and through. "Is there anything I can get you or provide that would make the stay for you and your aides more pleasant, Senator?”

“Thank you, Commander, but no,” Vrenick replied, speaking for both his aides and himself. “We have much to prepare before we reach the Summit, but we have everything we need for now.”

"Very well. If that changes, let me know. I'll leave you to your work," T'maekh replied. The last thing he needed was an annoyed Senator - best to leave them be and let them work. "Good day," he said as he left the room.

“At least this ship isn’t being run by an incompetent fool,” Vrenick remarked candidly after the Commander had gone, turning lazily on his heel to face his aides. He found that he rather liked T’maekh, although he chose to keep his full opinion of the Commander to himself.

Valara nodded in acknowledgment of the Senator’s statement before returning her full attention back to her work, grateful that they could resume their preparations for the Summit.

"Indeed," answered Marek. "The military couldn't have done a better job assigning an officer to his position. Unless of course, it could have been one that wouldn't interrupt Summit preparations." Soon, it would be time to put on his diplomatic face just as the Senator had done.

Re: Mission 14: Do As The Romulans Do

Post: # 2856Post Kersare
Thu Dec 31, 2009 10:34 pm

ON:
<<USS Malinche, Conference Room 2, Day 3, 1745>>

Isabel had arrived early to make sure everything was ready. Unsurprisingly, the chef had done a wonderful job - the food, of course, wouldn't be brought out until everyone had arrived, but she'd seen it and it looked delicious. She'd asked Jason and Nora to meet Commander T'maekh (NPC), Senator Vrenick (NPC), and the other Romulans in the transporter rooms.

Some of the other Senior Staff had apparently had the same idea and arrived early, a few others were seemingly still on their way. Isabel had invited Julie (NPC) to attend, as well as the Acting Chief Security/Tactical Officer - Lieutenant JG Stone (NPC).

Will had arrived not long after the captain. He had not attended very many diplomatic functions in his career, so this was all very unusual for him. Almost immediately, he moved to find a seat at the table, but did not actually sit down. Something told him that protocol would dictate he wait for their guests. Instead, he stood behind his chosen chair, hands resting on the headrest.

Peters walked in behind Schulz, still fussing with the cuffs of his dress uniform jacket. Once he was satisfied that those were laying correctly, he couldn't help but tug at the slightly-too-tight collar. One of these days he was going to find and strangle the officer responsible for these... things they called uniforms. Taking a seat on one side of Schulz, Peters muttered under his breath, "I hate dress uniforms."

Alexis arrived shortly after some of the others. She had taken a few minutes before the dinner to give her staff a final briefing concerning the sensitive nature of the situation. She also took some time to make sure that everything, including consoles, databases, and the entire Intelligence department, was securely locked out and no one could gain access without her knowing. She had left Ensign Derrin (NPC) in charge of monitoring things while most of the other staff were performing their assigned duties. She didn't make much conversation as she moved towards the table.

Anthony (NPC) entered the room confidently, despite his nerves. This was his first diplomatic function and he had spent the better part of the day coordinating security and making other arrangements in conjunction with the intelligence department. Too bad he wouldn't be able to relax at dinner. True, it was his main function to enjoy the meal, but a security officer was always on alert, especially around Romulans. The acting chief made his way over to the table, glancing toward the captain before standing next to Lieutenant Schulz. The two men exchanged a polite nod, but said nothing more while they waited.

Aaron was one of the last officers to arrive at the meeting. He had gotten caught up in a translation project and lost track of time. Thankfully his mess dress had been laid out ahead of time so it was just a matter of switching one uniform for another.

As a linguist and amateur anthropologist he had both a personal and professional interest in the dinner. Providing the Romulan culture was anything like the cultures he had studied both during and after his time at the Academy, how one behaved at a meal said a lot about them, even if this was a formal dinner. Also as Aaron was not fluent in Romulan but had a working knowledge in Vulcan, he hoped to pick up more of the Romulan language during the mission since the two languages were similar.

The chatter died down as the doors swished open once more, this time Jason and Nora entered along with the Romulans. Everyone was still alive and seemingly unharmed, so Isabel decided things were off to a decent start. "Welcome to the Malinche," she said.

T'maekh, just behind Jason, answered, "Thank you Captain. You have a fine ship."

Isabel smiled, "Please, have a seat."

Jason took his seat, doing his best to give off a calm air. He didn't think that any of the Romulans that they had onboard would try anything; after spending the last few minutes with them he had come agree that they really did want peace. His main concern was the fact that he knew there were several members of the Romulan government that weren't so keen on the Federation and the empire not blowing each other up.

The impression that Jason got from the Romulans that had come aboard was something that appeared to be some what atypical of the dealings he had with them in the past. They were warm, friendly, and even honest. He suspected that was another reason that they might not be all that well liked by other members of their own government.

Nora was feeling invigorated after the brief journey with the Romulan Senator and his entourage from the transporter rooms. In her experiences with them, Romulans always seemed to be somewhat unpredictable. For a telepath who could read most humanoids like an open book should she choose to, unpredictability was wonderfully refreshing. Senator Vrenick especially had surprised her with his almost talkative nature. Well, talkative for a Romulan, at least. Looking forward to both the meal and the company, she sat in the chair across from Commander T’maekh.

Feeling out of her element, Julie was relieved to see Nora had finally arrived. She wasn’t unfriendly by nature, but she was very new to the crew and still adjusting to her new assignment. She smiled when she saw Nora nod to the chair next to her and gladly claimed it as her own, murmuring her thanks to the counselor.

Alexis had already been standing behind the chair that she was to sit in for the dinner. She let the senior officers sit seconds before she quietly took her seat.

Though he would never admit it to anyone, Vrenick was rather pleased with the attention he and his fellow Romulans were being paid. The Federation ship he found himself on was interesting enough, and he had never been one to turn down a meal. Following Captain Kersare’s greeting and invitation to be seated, he had nodded in acknowledgment and took his seat. Subtly casting his eyes about the room, he noted the available exits and where each of his Romulan party were sitting. One in his position had to constantly be aware of these things.

Walking through the corridors of Starfleet's Prometheus class was…enlightening. The entire structure of the ship seemed to be built around human comfort. Although he knew as well as some that this ship was nothing to trifle with; especially after that incident several years ago. But now, in this dining room, comfort seemed to overwhelm him. That and the smell of dishes he hadn't had since they left Romulus. Marek took his seat after the Senator.

Valara was already feeling rather tired of the whole affair. If it had been up to her, she would have happily stayed aboard the Revok and gotten some real work done. Still, the senator did so love these sort of affairs, and as his aide, she had little choice but to join him. Looking just as bored as she felt, she reached for a glass of heimnhu and idly sipped at its contents.

Seeing that the Senator and his aides were seated, T'maekh also sat, signaling to the rest of his crew that they were also to be seated. It had been interesting to walk through the corridors of a Prometheus class vessel and he had no doubt the dinner would be at least as interesting.

Subcommander Kayrel's eyes surveyed the room discretely, looking for something wrong. She didn't see anything, at least not immediately, and eventually took her seat next to T'maekh. Part of her knew he didn't trust her and truthfully she didn't care - she got the job done and that's what mattered; he knew that as well. Kayrel would have preferred to remain on the Revok, but T'maekh insisted she come.

Alexis was trying to take in as much as she could from all the Romulans. Anything she could find that might help the Intel side of things would be great. Tactics that she'd been trained to watch for, like body language, were pretty much useless with the Romulans. Although, a few seemed somewhat edgy by their darting eyes. That was all that gave anything away to her. But then, she was trying to get information from all of them instead of one at a time. That made it more difficult. Alexis cast a glance toward Lt. JG Stone and nodded stoically. The arrangements he had made with her earlier were in place.

Once everyone was seated, Peters took a look around the room, noting that the Starfleet officers and the Romulans had sat down in bunches. The Malinche crew he could tell had chosen their seats much like he had, sitting next to or across from the people they worked with often, but making sure there were members of the Romulan contingent within conversation range. He wondered, idly, if the Romulans had enjoyed the tour they'd been given and how much he'd have to worry about stray Tal Shiar operatives trying to sneak into Engineering.

Anthony had briefly surveyed the Romulan delegation as they entered. He had kept the overt security to a minimum and made the conscious decision to enjoy his meal, rather than spending the whole time wondering if the Romulan across from him was about to attack. It would make the evening far less stressful in the end. Once the delegation had been seated, Anthony followed the senior officers in taking his seat, nodding politely to those around him, both Romulan and Starfleet, before turning his focus to the meal.

<<USS Malinche, Conference Room 2, Day 3, 1800>>

"I'm sure everyone is hungry, so we'll go ahead and get started with dinner," Isabel said. Perhaps she should have made some kind of speech, but the table was small enough that what she said at the table could be heard by all. Isabel glanced at T'maekh before addressing the Senator, "I'm very glad you and your aides were able to join us for dinner, Senator Vrenick."

T'maekh knew the Senator was the real guest of honor at the dinner, but was pleased to see that Kersare had acknowledged him. Being a Commanding Officer, he knew one had to keep up appearances.

Marek stared at the delicious looking food on the table in front of him. He just could believe how well they seemed to be treated. He then checked to see where the rest of his fellow Romulans were seated, and more importantly, where all the Starfleet personnel were seated. He might be an aide, but he was a Romulan first. He was not about to let something sneak up on him.

Appropriately enough the meal consisted largely of Romulan foods. Having done his research ahead of time, Aaron recognized several of the dishes. He watched several of the Malinche officers pick up the aypihl and wondered how many knew it wasn't an artichoke despite its appearances. Personally he decided to start with what appeared to be roasted tolekrya mixed in with some tehirla.

“Food, food everywhere, and not a bite to eat,” Julie murmured under her breath, taking hold of the only thing she knew to be safe–her own glass of water. She had always been a picky eater, and even as an adult she had a difficult time stepping out of her comfort zone as far as cuisine was concerned. However, she knew that it would be rude not to partake of the feast at least in part, and steeled her stomach as she reached for a scoop of...something. Something...green. “You look like you’re enjoying yourself,” she commented to Nora.

Nora, who was attacking a full plate of food, paused to chuckle good-naturedly at Julie’s obvious discomfort. “I was raised by diplomats,” she offered cheerfully. “I used to travel with them often, so I was introduced to a great variety of foods growing up. After some of the things I’ve eaten, I’m actually rather partial to Romulan fare. Well, except for the fish,” she added as an afterthought, grimacing at the mere mention of seafood.

As Isabel started putting food on her plate, she addressed T'maekh, "Commander, how long have you had the Revok?"

T'maekh smiled slightly, "It will be ten years in a month, Captain. It's been quite an experience."

"I can imagine," Isabel smiled. "We've certainly had our share of adventures on the Malinche."

Alexis hadn't been on board on that long, but she certainly knew the truth of that statement. And she expected to learn much more. She turned her attention toward the Romulan Commander, attempting to engage in idle conversation while the Captain spoke with the Senator That, and she wasn't as familiar with Romulan cuisine as she should've been. She'd spent most of her time studying the personnel reports, not the food.

"Commander T'maekh," said Alexis as she reached for some vyinn a 'Rhynne, "would you recommend yeho, hholaer, or something else with the fish?"

T'maekh looked over at the woman in Intelligence grey, "Well, Lieutenant, that partly depends on what your tastes are. The yeho is a little lighter and refreshing - it does play off the notes of the fish, so to speak. I'm not usually one for hholaer with my fish, but the heimnhu is an excellent choice if you enjoy wine."

"Thank you," replied Alexis. She poured herself some of the yeho and took a drink to wash down her bite of fish. "It's good," she said to the Commander. "I do like the way it plays off the fish."

Smiling, T'maekh smiled at the Chief Intelligence Officer. "I am glad you think so, Lieutenant."

She nodded a response, her mouth full of fish. T'maekh seems cordial enough thought Alexis, but his First Officer, Sub-Commander Kayrel hasn't spoken hardly a word to anyone since the dinner began. Unusual, I should keep an eye that one. She attempted to catch Lt. Stone's eye and subtly shift her gaze to Kayrel. If that didn't work, she hoped he wouldn't mind a quick mental statement.

While T'maekh made nice with the Starfleet crew, Kayrel mostly kept to herself. She made small talk every so often, but avoided joining in on the main conversations. Mostly Kayrel preferred to simply observe anyway - one of the best ways to learn.

Peters grimaced as a bowl of Viinerine was passed to him and quickly passed it on, prompting a chuckle from the Romulan seated across from him. Peters quirked an eyebrow at him, but said nothing as he scooped a helping of something that looked like a pot roast onto his plate. He was familiar with very few Romulan dishes, and he liked most of the ones he did know, but Viinerine was right next to gagh on his list of inedible substances.

Jason smiled at Peter's discomfort; he had worse things then Romulan cuisine before. Jason had developed a taste for Viinerine while he served with the Marans, they always seemed to be into trying out other races food, they even managed to make a good gagh.

"Just put some salt on Mr. Peters," Jason, taking some of the Viinerine. "Its not really all that bad. Better than field rations."

"You're welcome to it, Commander," Peters retorted. "In my experience the only thing that will help viinerine is a tri-cobalt device."

Aaron was enjoying watching the reaction of his shipmates as much as the actions of the Romulans. During his third year at the Academy, he had attended a dinner made up primarily of science and diplomatic majors. What the professors in charge failed to mention was that the dinner consisted of several "exotic" foods. It was an experience he would not soon forget and since then made it a point to develop a "well traveled palate."

"Senator," Isabel began, "Have you traveled often for an assignment such as this?" She took a bite of her food and waited for his reply.

“I do travel often,” Vrenick replied after setting down his drink, speaking loudly to be heard over the quiet hubbub of the meal. “However, this assignment is somewhat unique in and of itself. It is, I think it safe to say, an opportunity of immense importance, and one that I am pleased to be a part of.”

Smiling Isabel replied, "I do believe you are correct in its importance. I certainly hope the Summit goes well."

“Thank you, Captain,” Vrenick said in a quieter voice. “I am confident that it will.”

Giving Vrenick a nod, Isabel took a sip of her heimnhu before continuing with her meal. She'd eaten a few Romulan dishes before, and while she could eat it, it wasn't one of her favorites. Isabel's eyes moved around the room, observing how her Senior Staff was doing with the meal...

Alexis was enjoying the meal…for the most part. The food that she was eating actually tasted pretty decent. She could think of other people she would have rather been sitting at the table with other than a Romulan Senator, his aides, and the senior staff of a Warbird. She wasn't very diplomatic but she had been in Starfleet Intelligence long enough to know how to deceive her way through stuff like this.

"How's your dinner," Will asked Peters, still poking around at his own food. He wasn't all that adventurous when it came to his appetite and tended to stick to a very routine menu of meal options.

Peters looked over at Schulz's plate and grinned. "Oh, my dinner is fine. Look at it this way... we could be eating Klingon food."

Will let out a short laugh that he quickly stifled with his napkin. Realizing that it may not be the best diplomatic protocol to compare Romulan and Klingon cuisine, he used the pretense of laying out his napkin on his lap to refocus himself.

Aaron turned to the Romulans. "An old saying on Earth goes like this; 'Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you who you are.' What does a traditional Romulan meal tell others?"

Looking up from her meal, Kayrel met Aaron's eyes, "I believe, Lieutenant, that it would tell others that Romulans are not a race that should be trifled with." After a brief glance at Vrenick and T'maekh, the Romulans eyes slid back to her meal.

It wasn't an expected response, but then again the Romulans weren't known for being the most predictable species.
"Touché, Sub commander. I personally have had no dealings with the Romulan Empire, but from what I understand they have proven to be a formidable opponent and an equally valuable ally."
Aaron hoped his answer wasn't too bold, but even if it was he doubted the Romulans would try anything.

Marek nearly choked and dropped his fork. It wasn't something he expected to hear out of anyone on a diplomatic mission. But truth be told, he was wondering if any of his fellow Romulans would eventually bring something like that up. He hoped nothing would go wrong. After all, they were the guests on a Federation ship. It could look bad for the Empire and may impact the Summit. Although he couldn't yet come up with a reason how. He looked at Senator Vrenick to ensure he was alright and not too shaken by that statement. Then Marek patted his stomach area and went back to his meal.

Alexis was busy having a conversation with another of the Romulans and missed the comment. But there was no way she could've missed what came next. It was one of those awkward silences when it seemed no one knew exactly what to say. Most eyes were on one of three people; Kayrel, T'maekh or Vrenick. She supposed everyone's mind was still on Kayrel's statement, so she picked it out of the forefront of a random officer's brain. So that's what this was all about, she thought.

Far from being upset, Vrenick was rather amused at the human’s statement. “That is a common conception, yes,” he calmly agreed, taking a leisurely sip from his wine. “But if I may be so bold to say, I believe that is one of the reasons our presence at the Summit is so important. Perhaps if there are certain changes made in our government and policies, in the future the Empire will be remembered for more than its military prowess. That, at least, is my wish for the future of the Empire.”

Peters cleared his throat and decided he'd try to inject a little more levity back into the conversation. With a smile, he turned in the direction of the Senator. "Senator, if you don't mind my saying so, your people are already known for more than military prowess. As a scientist and an engineer I can say that there are many technological feats that you have managed that I would love a chance to take a look at. And," he said, holding up his glass, "You make the best ale."

<<Ready Room, Day 7, 1300>>

Isabel had been quite relieved that the dinner with the Revok and Senatorial Staff had gone fairly well. It had had some awkward moments and some tension, but overall it could have gone much worse. Someone could have been assassinated. That wouldn't have gone over well.

Still, Anthony (NPC) and Alexis were concerned. Truthfully, Isabel was as well. The Revok's First Officer seemed a bit off and who could tell about the Senatorial Aides? Isabel had asked the two officers to prepare a report for the Starbase 386 Commanding Officer about the situation to hopefully help things go more smoothly.

Noting the time, Isabel stood from her desk and moved towards the door - time to contact the base about their impending arrival.

<Bridge>

As Isabel walked onto the bridge, a few of the bridge officers glanced up, but others were busy preparing for their arrival at Starbase 386. Though she considered taking a seat, she instead chose to stand in front of her chair and addressed the Communications Officer, "Raise Starbase 386, Ensign."

The ensign nodded, fingers tapping quickly at the console before turning back to Isabel, "Ready, ma'am."

Isabel watched as the face of a young woman, seemingly in the Ops Center, appeared on the view screen.

"Good afternoon, Captain, what can I do for you," the woman in services gold asked.

"Good afternoon," Isabel began. "This is Captain Kersare of the USS Malinche. We're headed to Starbase 386 - escorting the IRW Revok for the Taevon Summit. We'll be arriving within an hour, could you please inform Rear Admiral Locke?"

Laura (NPC) blinked, "Rear Admiral Locke?"

Isabel raised an eyebrow, wondering why the woman asked her about the Rear Admiral. "Yes, the Commanding Officer of the base...."

"Oh, I'm sorry ma'am. Actually Rear Admiral Locke is no longer 386's CO. Captain Lange was given command just today," Laura said quickly.

"Captain James Lange?" Isabel was a bit surprised - the last she'd heard, James had received command of the Peacekeeper after their previous joint mission. There hadn't been any mention of him becoming the Commanding Officer of 386, nor of Locke's reassignment.

Nodding, the young woman replied, "Yes, ma'am."

"Alright, well...please inform Captain Lange that we'll be arriving at the base within an hour along with the Romulan Star Empire's delegate," Isabel requested, trying to let the new information sink in.

"I'll be sure to do so and will inform the Acting Dockmaster that he should be expecting you," Laura said with a smile.

"Thank you, Malinche out," she said. This would likely be rather interesting...Isabel would have to meet with James to see how the change in command had come about, and how he was taking it.
