<Mission 18 – Putting the Pieces Together>

<<Federation Transport Ship, Guest Quarters, Day 5, 2045>>

Personal Log ON:

Well, the past few months have yielded an interesting turn of events. A short stint on one starship only to be transferred to another. But I’m glad its not on a Starbase at least. I’d rather be moving around on a starship than floating stationary on some big target.

I can’t wait to get to this ship. It’s a Prometheus class; one of the best tactical ships in my opinion. But that doesn’t seem to account for much, or at least it didn’t. You know, that’s one reason I can’t wait to get onboard the Malinche and meet her crew and senior staff. I have got to put that last assignment behind me and the best way to do that is get to know the crew right away. But back to the ship, I can’t wait to explore it. Wait…I hope the Captain doesn’t mind me exploring. Hmm, I can hear it now. ‘You had better watch out. The CoB’s sneaky. He’ll be standing right behind you before you know it.’ Or ‘Scatter if you don’t want a headslap.’ Oh well….

Oh, speaking of Captain Kersare, I’ve read some of her mission reports from the Malinche. She has taken that ship to hell and back it seems. And I’m thrilled to be onboard because on the next trip, I want to reserve the hottest place for those two wastes of oxygen that murdered Jenny and Sharon. They…they…oh I’ve just got to take a breath.

There. On another note, the senior NCO’s I’ve talked to speak highly of her character. They say she is determined when it comes to the accomplishment of the mission. Yet at the same time, takes care of those who serve under her. I like that. It speaks volumes about who the person is behind the uniform. At least to me.

Ah, well, it’s time to head out.

Personal Log OFF.

<Mission 18 – Putting the Pieces Together>

<<Federation Transport Ship, Guest Quarters, Day 7, 2045>>

Computer, activate Chief Petty Officer Devon Harmon’s personal log. These fancy freighters that Starfleet calls ‘Transport Ships’ are slower than an android getting a joke. I simply can’t believe how long it’s taking getting to Starbase 422. Over the past two days, I’ve been wondering if leaving early was a such a good idea. The ship I was scheduled to depart on would’ve been much faster than catching an early hop on a transport. Then I think back to…well…forget about that. It’s time to move on. This is a new chapter in my life and I intend to make it a long and better one.

On another note, I started thinking about Jenny and Sharon yesterday. It’s still tough. The ghosts seem to follow me no matter how far I try to get from that Starbase and assignment. A friend once told me that the ghosts we hear and see are made by us; the jobs we do an the memories we make. I chuckled and nodded in agreement. He had his moments for somebody that wasn’t even a counselor. And I’m glad he wasn’t…he would’ve made a horrible one. But Jenny, she…she kept me going. She understood what it was all about…what I was doing. And the fun times we had with Sharon growing up.

You know, that makes me think of the camping trip we took in the holo-suite. It was a campsite in the Ardennes in France. We had to hike to it. Sharon would fall asleep without fail about an hour after dark. Boy, was she a sound sleeper. We would wait about thirty minutes and end the program. Sharon wouldn’t even flinch when I picked her up and carried her back to our quarters. Ahhh…those were the days.

Oh, uh, I guess I got lost in my thoughts for a few minutes. Computer, end personal log.

<Mission 18 – Putting the Pieces Together>

<<USS Malinche, CoB’s Quarters, Day 14, 1915>>

Personal Log ON:

The past six days have been interesting to say the least. I’ve done some prep work in the office, meandered the ship, and met some of the crew along the way. I’ve also been able to enjoy a little of the shoreleave with everyone else. The crew that I have met in my meanderings have been some of the most polite I’ve ever run across. I truly believe that I could stay here until I retire or die.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with some of the Tactical officers the other day in the Lounge, Lieutenant’s Stone and Weaver. They had just finished some repairs to the forward torpedo launchers down on Deck 15. Or I should say, in Deck 15. It’s encouraging to see departments helping each other out like this. I have to wonder, though, does it happen often? Anyway, they were friendly and we all had a good time. They did mention that a rescued Borg was serving as a security officer within the department. I find that intriguing. I’ve never had many dealings with the Borg…rescued or not. I wonder if he has retained any of the knowledge he had while part of the Collective? Or even more, who he was before he was assimilated. I mean, I assume he was some kind of Starfleet Security. Seems to me that it would be a lot of trouble to train a rescued Borg in something he had no clues about. But…I’ve got to set aside some time to talk with him if the Captain allows.

Back to the leave. It’s been relaxing. I’ve been able to forget about my previous assignment during this time. Which is a huge relief. At any rate, this Starbase has some interesting people. I’ve seen everything rough freighter captains to slender shop owners. Not to mention a few fights. But the most interesting part has been watching the onlookers when the fights break out. Rule thirty-five, always watch the watchers. One or two looked like they had a vested interest in the fight. Probably gamblers looking to place a bet anywhere they can. One young lady looked on horrified. At one point, she covered her mouth with her hands. Probably close to the kid that was getting the crap beat out of him.

Huh, I guess I’ll never get the old Criminal Investigation Specialist out of me. That said, I’d better call it an evening. I can hear my steel drum calling.

<Mission 19 – Another Voyage Home>

<<USS Malinche, CoB’s Office, Day 1, 1700>>

Personal Log ON:

Huh, what a mission. Only in Starfleet could something like this happen. Yeah, it is frustrating. But what a mission. That’s about all I’m going to say regarding that. I’d like to keep my job and rank if at all possible.

Well I guess this is the most diverse assignment I’ve ever had. This afternoon, I got to meet a Caitian. I told her that in all my years of serving in Starfleet, I had never met anyone like her. I suppose she must have thought I was some kind of weirdo for watching the tip of her tail twitch. But it was almost hypnotizing; like a snake charmer or a tiger ready to pounce on it’s prey. Even though she said not to sweat it, it still bugs me. I still hope it doesn’t come back to get me. Anyway, just by her attitude, I’ve got to wonder if she was prior enlisted. She seemed so down to earth and relaxed. Even offered a mint to help me feel more relaxed. But that may just be her culture. I don’t know.

The Security and Tactical Chief is something else. He’s a very thoughtful man. And by that, I mean that he chooses his words carefully. He puts a lot of thought into what he’s going to say before he says it. I met with him in his office today to go over some things. After looking at a PADD of information, he sat there and didn’t say a thing. Then he looked over at me. Heh, controlling the room and the conversation. It’s no wonder he’s sitting in that chair. The man’s a born leader.

I had an interesting run-in today with a group of security guards in Armory One. They were playing some sort of game instead of doing their jobs. But the interesting part was one Petty Officer Third Class Benoit. She reminds me of somebody and it took me all day to figure out who…my Sharon. Sharon had red hair, too. Got that from Jenny. Ahg, so much for getting away from those ghosts. This one has flesh and bone. But maybe it’s some sort of sign. I’ve never been one for that kind of thing, but…. I’ll just have to make the best of it and hope I don’t slip up and call her Sharon. Heh, I’d hate to explain that one.

Time to go, busy day tomorrow.

<Mission 19 – Another Voyage Home>

<<USS Malinche, CoB’s Quarters, Day 2, 0700>>

“Computer, begin Devon Harmon’s personal log. The Senior Staff briefing seemed to go well. I had forgotten how much went on in those things. But it was good. I got to see a little bit of how everyone else thinks. I also like the way the Captain gets suggestions and thoughts from the rest of her staff. It’s not like that one senior NCO on that Starbase…my way, no highway option. That was an assignment that took some getting used to.

But, work aside, I’ve got to find some extracurricular activities onboard this ship. The last thing I want to do is get stuck in a rut. Work, quarters, sleep is not a good routine. I need to find something else other than the woodworking and steel drum to occupy my time. Those two keep me in my quarters and I must get out before I go stir crazy. Perhaps this afternoon I’ll spend some time in the Lounge, just relaxing. Or maybe I’ll find a good holodeck program. That seems to help pass the time for the rest of the crew.

So far, I’m enjoying my new assignment on the Malinche. She’s a great ship. I would like to see her in Multi Vector Assault Mode sometime. At least I think I would. That would mean that we were in a battle which necessitated the separation. And that would have to be an intense battle. It is taking me a while to learn my way around the ship, though. I’m going to have start my wandering again. Maybe I’ll do that this morning after checking in with the Captain. I want to see if she has anything for me first.

That said, I should go. I’ve still got some things to do before the morning shift starts and I need to report. As the Romulans say, Jolan true.

Computer, end Personal log.”
